As it is also the case for the USA, the Canadian new light vehicle market lodges a surprisingly solid 2.3% year-on-year increase in 2025 to 1,907,794 units. This despite a turbulent year of tariffs, counter-tariffs, sourcing changes and cancelled emissions targets. It is the highest annual volume since pre-pandemic 2019 (1,928,829 sales). General Motors (+1.9%) holds onto the OEM top spot, holding off Ford Motor (+5.5%) now just 5,916 units below vs. 15,746 in 2024. Similarly, Toyota Motor (+4.4%) resist an assault by Hyundai-Kia (+10.5%), off just 418 sales vs. 13,522 last year. The VW Group (+4.4%), Honda Canada (+4.3%) and the Nissan Group (+3.6%) all beat the market whereas Stellantis (-11.8%) dives.
Ford (+8.8%) is the most popular brand in Canada for the 17th consecutive year, widening the gap over #2 Toyota (+3.4%). Chevrolet (-0.7%) is stable ahead of Hyundai (+11%) and Honda (+3.8%) ensuring the Top 5 is unchanged on 2024. Nissan (+7.8%) overtakes GMC (+0.1%) for 6th place, with Kia (+9.2%), Volkswagen (+2.8%) and Mazda (+13.2%) camping on their 2024 rankings to round out the Top 10. Below, Chrysler (+60.8%), Buick (+24.4%), Lincoln (+17.8%) and Fiat (+85.3%) impress whereas Ram (-23.3%) and Jeep (-11%) suffer and Tesla (-63.5%) implodes.
The Ford F-Series (+3.4%) once again tightens its grip over the models charts and achieves its highest annual volume since pre-pandemic 2019. It is the 16th year in a row that the F-Series is #1 in Canada (no interruption since 2009). Ford’s hero model celebrates 60 consecutive years as the country’s most popular pick-up truck. The Toyota RAV4 (-2.6%) catches its breath before the introduction of a new generation in 2026. The RAV4 is the #1 SUV in Canada for the 10th straight year. Below, the GMC Sierra (+2%) stays at #3 while the Chevrolet Silverado (+5.2%) climbs up two spots to #4. The Honda CR-V (+1.1%) closes out the Top 5 like last year whereas the Ram Pick-up (-25%) sinks again to #6 (it was already down -24.3% in 2024). The Hyundai Tucson (+40.2%) and Nissan Kicks (+70.1%) both break into the Top 10 to #7 and #8 respectively. Although down 5 spots to a paltry #13, the Honda Civic (-2.3%) is the best-selling passenger car in the country for the 26th time in the past 28 years.
