Switzerland September 2025: Tesla Model Y and Skoda Elroq on top
The Skoda Elroq is up to a record 2nd place in September.
New car sales in Switzerland are stable in September at -0.6% year-on-year to 20,029 registrations. The year-to-date tally is now off -3.9% to 168,927. 4×4 sales drop faster than the market at -5.1% YoY to 10.132 and 50.6% share vs. 53% a year ago. BEVs are up 13.6% to 5,182 units for the month for a 25.9% market share vs. 22.6% in September 2024. Year-to-date BEV sales are up just 8.9% to 35,725 and 21.1% share vs. 18.7% over the same period in 2024. HEVs are down -2.4% in September to 6,805 and 34% share vs. 34.6% last year and PHEVs surge 49.8% to 2,553 and 12.7% share vs. 8.5% a year ago.
In the brands charts, Volkswagen (+5.5%) keeps the lead at 10.7% while Mercedes (+7.9%) and Skoda (-1%) are both up one spot on last month to #2 and #3 respectively. They benefit from the freefall of BMW (-19.4%) down to #4 for the month but still #2 year-to-date. Audi (-9.8%) and Tesla (-4.3%) struggle but Volvo (+4%) and Toyota (+2.7%) are up. Dacia (+24.6%) delivers the biggest YoY gain in the Top 10, catching up on a poor year-ago result. Further down, Chinese MG (+518.6%) and BYD (+2250%) are the stars of the show, with Cupra (+77.7%), Opel (+57.5%) and Alfa Romeo (+50%) also strong.
Over in the models aisle, the Tesla Model Y (-10.5%) posts a traditional strong end-of-quarter result and reaches #1 for the third time this year after March and June. It climbs to #1 year-to-date as a result. Confirming its success across Europe, the new Skoda Elroq is up 8 spots on August to land in 2nd place overall, eclipsing its previous best of #5 reached last June. The Mercedes GLC (+2.1%) is back up three ranks on last month to #3, a ranking it also holds YTD. The VW Tiguan (-30%), in difficulty, and Skoda Kodiaq (+1.6%) round out the Top 5. Notice also the BMW X3 (+45%) at #5, the VW Golf (+26.4%) at #8 and the VW Polo (+41.3%) at #10.
