South Africa September 2025: 7th straight double-digit market gains (+24.3%)

Toyota Starlet sales are up 160.2% year-on-year in September.

New vehicle sales in South Africa continue on their stunning run at +24.3% year-on-year in September to 54,700 units. This is the 7th straight month of double-digit year-on-year upticks and the highest September result in 10 years: since September 2015 (55,322). Passenger cars are up 28% to 38,603 and light commercials up 19.7% to 13,078. Toyota (+29.9%) manages to beat the galloping market to reach 25.9% share vs. 24.7% so far this year. It is followed by Suzuki (+20.9%) and a struggling Volkswagen Group (-2.1%). Ford (+9.6%) and Hyundai (+5.8%) also can’t match the market growth but GWM (+50.6%), Mahindra (+50.3%), Chery (+40.3%) and Kia (+32.9%) can. Jetour is down one spot to #16 and MG up two to #17.

The Toyota Hilux (+23.7%) leads the way in the models charts with a strong 6.7% share vs. 6.1% year-to-date. The VW Polo Vivo (+2.6%) is up one rank on last month to #2 ahead of the Ford Ranger (-4.7%) up two to #3. The Suzuki Swift (+320.2%) stays at #4 but surges YoY. The Isuzu D-Max (+29%) rounds out the Top 5 while the Toyota Corolla Cross (-7.5%) is down four spots on August to #6. The Toyota Starlet (+160.2%), Vitz (+77.6%) and Chery Tiggo 4 Pro (+39.1%) also impress in the remainder of the Top 10.
