Netherlands September 2025: Toyota and Tesla Model Y on top
The Yaris Cross (+130.9%) helps push Toyota to #1 brand in September.
New car sales in the Netherlands edge up 4.4% year-on-year in September to 32,199 units, leading to a year-to-date tally off -2.9% to 269,953. Year to date, HEVs + PHEVs account for 48.8% of the market (131,616 sales), BEVs are at 34.7% (93,768), petrol at 14.9% (40,234), diesel at 1.3% (3,515) and LPG at 0.3% (819). This month Toyota (+29.2%) grabs the brand leadership off Kia (+14.8%) for just 32 sales and for the first time since March 2024. Volkswagen (-0.6%) comes in at #3 above Renault (+62.7%) in outstanding shape and Skoda (+9.1%). The Top 5 brands all fit within less than one percentage point of market share (7.8% to 8.7%). Cupra (+183.7%), Opel (+51.6%), Mercedes (+30.9%) and Hyundai (+22.6%) also press below. #1 brand a year ago, Tesla sinks -48.4% to #6.
Model-wise, despite a ghastly -44.4% year-on-year fall the Tesla Model Y returns to #1 for the second time this year after last June. It is up to #3 year-to-date (-52.2%) whereas it led the Full Year 2024 rankings. The star of the past two months, the Kia Picanto (+66.2%) posts another very solid month at #2, a ranking it also holds YTD vs. #6 over the Full Year 2024. The Skoda Elroq confirms it is an instant blockbuster at #3 overall with 3.1% share vs. 2.1% so far this year. The Toyota Yaris Cross (+130.9%) repeats at #4 with the Toyota Yaris (+133.1%), Renault Clio (+38.9%) and Toyota Aygo X (+18.6%) also showing fantastic YoY growth. The Tesla Model 3 (-54.4%) ranks #8 and the Renault 5 (+4860%) celebrates one year in market with a strong 11th place. The launch honeymoon is well and truly over for the Kia EV3 dow to a paltry #15. It remains #1 year-to-date for now.
