Media post: Egypt to Become a Hub for Automotive IoT

The National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) of Egypt has recently given the go-ahead for companies that build smart vehicles to operate Internet of Things (IoT) services. This means drivers of these cars will be able to benefit from tracking, navigation and emergency assistance tools, all while keeping their data safe and protected. This positions the country as one of the foremost in the integration of advanced automotive tech.

What Is the Internet of Things?

The Internet of Things is the name given to the network of objects interconnected by the internet. They often contain sensors, cameras, and technology that allows them to exchange information with other devices. You may have them in your home, in objects such as smart home devices.

When it comes to automobiles, there are several useful advantages to this. Collision detection systems are one. They can share data with both other vehicles and infrastructure, preventing accidents before they happen. Other uses could include fleet monitoring for businesses, giving real-time data on arrivals, locations and fuel consumption.

The Minister of ICT in the country has added that this is a way to increase driver safety. It is also believed that AI technologies will continuously improve these services. The President of the NTRA backed him, adding that it is a new beginning for the country’s smart transport system.

The country is undergoing change through its Digital Egypt strategy. This will transform government systems and the community ecosystem into a digital and data-driven economy. The concept is that this will help deliver public services in a faster and simpler way. It will not only impact traffic, but also touch on real estate, tax, the legal system and licensing services.

The tech sector in the country is still developing, and they are hoping to attract new talent along with upskilling existing workers. This will involve developing a range of sectors, from blockchain to gaming. Its provision to the iGaming sector is one industry growing in the country, with service providers and software solutions being based there.

This is the industry concerned with the supply of online gambling games, such as table and slot titles. Over the last few years, this has grown into a sector worth £4.4 billion per annum, with £3.6 billion of that coming from slots. There are even Egyptian-themed games like the Eye of Horus slot, which take graphical cues from the country’s rich heritage. While the country has laws forbidding online gambling, further development for the global market is one that they could benefit from.

The Next Move for Digital Egypt

Egypt’s move is a curveball. While most governments are focusing on the business aspects of technology and the revenue it can bring, Egypt are using it to address real-world problems and improve the lives of its citizens.

The benefits this could bring are endless. They could improve not just transport, but healthcare, businesses and social issues. It remains to be seen if this will work, but if it does, Egypt could be one of the most advanced countries in the world when it comes to automotive integration.
