  1. “Rust is no longer problem with European production.”

This is simply not true. Many european cars have rust problems due to road salt. Even though cars today are more resistant to rust, it’s always a big risk to buy a car from Germany that’s a few years old for this reason. European cars have a better brand image, but they’re not better than others. Don’t other brands offer discounts? Is it only german ones? How many cars have you bought in Germany? A year ago, I bought a two-year-old Porsche in Luxembourg, which depreciated 50% in those two years since new. In the US, the cars that depreciate the most are also European luxury cars. European cars depreciate significantly for several reasons: they’re expensive to maintain, they tend to have problems due to the high complexity and poor quality of certain components, they’re too expensive when purchased new, few mechanics like to work on them, so they charge a lot for maintenance, etc.. A lot of reasons. You want real quality and fair price you buy an Asian car or some Dacia/Skoda.

    1. I once bought a show car in Magdeburg. I don’t buy used cars. I think it’s not worth it and it’s risky. You can get a good deal on a new one from local dealers.
But I would definitely buy a Porsche for half after 4 years, if it wasn’t wrecked. If you do similar deals, let me know. I’ll come and take a look.
If there are chronic problems with an expensive car, the car manufacturer usually buys it back. It is necessary to deal with them. Nobody wants to risk a bad reputation.
My Peugeot 508 is now 11 year old. No trace of rust except for the bolt heads on the rear axle. Great car.

  2. It isnt depreciation. New cars are sold at a discount to companies and rental companies, and they have to sell them soon because they are already being pressured to buy new ones.
Most used cars are sold to Czechia from Bavaria, because the prices are good there and it’s close, even though the roads are salted a lot. Rust is no longer problem with European production.

I noticed Tesla is offering new TMY Performance for Europe with delivery in October. Offer for Australia from December. It must be the Berlin factory. This model isn’t opened in Asia and North America. Maybe Tesla will revive the interest of Europeans.

  3. People in my country go to Germany to buy cars because cars depreciate more there, and they usually buy an Audi, Bmw or Mercedes. This is the case in many countries. There’s also the problem of road salt, but many just don’t care, they buy the car because of the symbol and premium image. In general germans only buy foreign cars if they are much cheaper than German cars. So foreign luxury brands sell very little, except for the XC60, which is the exception.

  4. In Germany German Cars don‘t depreciate that fast, even if Mazdas or Toyotas are a bit better there. Inspections and parts are also more expensive often. Not every city has a Toyota dealer, while VW (and so Skoda, Cupra etc.) is in every village. So you buy from the guy you know. Germans also tend to buy what they know, so if your Family always had a VW, Mercedes, Opel or Toyota it’s likely the Kids will buy them too.
And Pavel is Right about hybrids. Toyota sold decent numbers of Diesels here. Business travellers still prefer them or maybe Electric. Hybrids tend to drin a lot on the Autobahn. Also They are often not drivers cars. For Germans thats important. Toyota Yaris GR and 86 are very beloved here. I usually travel with 180-220km/h so I want a good handling car for that. The Mazda3 is Brillant for that.
I think Part of Skodas success was that people see it as the same as VW, so it’s still „buy what they know“. VW made a big mistake to make Skodas bigger but cheaper. Years it was ok, but now people are not willing to pay more Money for a VW or Audi, if the Skoda is almost the same. Since the Passat is now the same length, I think less people go for the Superb here.
Dacias on the other hand are also a Statement. And the new ones are really cool looking.
Big Opels may have never found many private customers, although I wouldn‘t be too sure here. But big Models of any Brand are usually leased via Companys.

  5. German customers prefer sustainability and lasting value.
Unfortunately, Audi is going through some crisis and has no models ahead.
The new T-roc looks great. It will definitely sell well.
Despite all of Toyota’s current problems in Europe, it will still be VW’s biggest rival.
Stellantis needs to improve. Great brands like Opel with huge potential.

    1. What do you mean by lasting value? Germans change cars quite frequently, I wouldn’t say that they care a lot about lasting value. Perhaps that’s why they don’t value reliability very much.

Germany has never had such a high rate of poverty, social exclusion, and inequality as it does today. Perhaps this explains why luxury brands and very affordable brands like Dacia and Skoda are at the top. Opel, as always, only exists in the B segment.

      1. These models sell well to other customers, less loss of value. They keep in great shape. In Europe, its necessary to focus on lasting value. Not important to race how many cars we produce and scrap each year.
Opel was strong in larger cars like Vectra, Insignia. Maybe Opel could have an affordable sports model, which has no one in Europe.
Unfortunately, social inequality in worst form comes with socialist governments across Europe. In Germany, there has long been a socialist government, whatever its name. Subsidies and discounts for electric cars are very bad, it increases social inequality. People must accept responsibility for the state, not suck it up with subsidies. Not companies at all. This increases populism. Vote for me and I will give you this and that and that… We need to hear it correctly “Vote for me and I will take €1000 from you and give you €500 back in some form. In a few years you will be very poor”. If you’re rich, you have an advisor who will tell you how to escape. If you’re poor, they take it away from you every month. Look at Argentina, how the lower and middle classes have prospered now.

      2. European brand cars depreciate significantly, while Toyotas are the cars that retain their value the most. If that were the case (lasting value), Germans would buy more Toyotas and Japanese cars. Germans buy a lot of german cars, or when they buy foreign cars, they buy them because of the low price. That’s why Toyotas, which have better quality than european brands, don’t sell very well, Toyotas are not very cheap. Large Opel cars, like those large cars from french car brands, were only mostly sold to companies and fleets; they were never exactly profitable.

      3. I partially agree.
In my country, Toyotas are company cars. 74% of Toyotas are in companies. Toyota has a very robust service network on par with European brands. It’s very reliable. BUT.
Toyota makes hybrids, quite heavy cars. Perfect in the city, but worse on the highway. High consumption. In the US it’s fine, as you can only drive 105 km/h on the highway. In Germany there are a lot of restrictions, probably because of noise, but most sections you can drive faster, that’s bad for a hybrid.
VW group and German premium cars make a lot of diesel, which is great on the highway. Low consumption. Rational choice. Germany is relatively large and the highways are for free. A lot of people drive on the highway very often.
Toyota will be stronger when it introduces more BEV variants and the prices of fast charging become more acceptable. Without a strong desel, Toyota is limited.
I spoke to a local Vietnamese, he drives a Skoda Kodiaq I. I asked him why Vietnamese people here don’t buy Asian cars. He said European cars are better. He would like a big BMW, but he isn’t rich.
This means it’s a lot of a mix of personal preferences, myths and rational choices.

      4. Don‘t believe everything you hear. There is not a high Level of poverty here. It’s just crying on a very high level. And yes Germans care a lot about resale value and private buyers have their cars for many years. Thats a problem for Chinese Cars for example. New Brands are always a risk, because if they go bust, they aren‘t worth anything anymore. And Chinese cars have probably bad resale value anyway. Cars that are frequently changed are mostly leasing cars. Good for VW and Skoda.

      5. Germany is a large country. There may not be poverty in your city, but there is poverty in Germany at record levels. In fact, most German states have a GDP per capita below the EU average.
