Europe August 2025: VW T-Roc repeats at #1, Toyota Yaris Cross & Hyundai Tucson at record levels

The Toyota Yaris Cross ranks at a record 3rd place across Europe in August.

According to ACEA data, the European market (UE+EFTA+UK) is up 4.7% to 791,349 units in August, leading to a year-to-date tally up just 0.4% to 8,691,840. JATO data has August sales up 5% to 790,177. Looking at the Top 5 markets, Spain is up 17.2%, Germany up 5%, France up 2.2%, the UK is down -2% and Italy is off -2.7%. Best performing countries are Romania up 51.7%, Lithuania up 52.4%, Iceland up 30.5%, Latvia up 39.2%, Bulgaria up 25.9%, Austria up 25.3% and Norway up 25.2%. At the other end of the scale, Finland is down -19.7%, Cyprus down -12.2% and Belgium down -11%.

This month BEV sales soar 26.8% to 159,810 and 20.2% share vs. 16.7% in August 2024. This is however partly due to particularly weak year-ago results as Germany crashed -36.6% as subsidies had stopped. The 20.2% share is the second best of all time below the 21.7% reached in August 2023. Notice also PHEV deliveries up 56.3% to 82,684 and 10.4% share vs. 7% a year ago. Year-to-date, BEVs are up 26% to 1,536,433 and 17.7% share vs. 14.1% over the same period in 2024 while PHEVs improve 28% to 786,347 and 9% share vs. 7.1% last year. Meanwhile HEVs are up 11.7% for the month to 264,317 and 33.4% share vs. 31.3% a year ago, leading up to a YTD total up 15% to 3,019,757 and 34.7% share vs. 30.3% over the first 8 months of 2024.

The Hyundai Tucson reaches an all-time high 6th place in August.

August rankings are traditionally skewed towards Germany as the only market above 100,000 registrations (207,229) as France, Italy, Spain and the UK slow down during the peak of summer holidays. Volkswagen (+5.4%) follows the market to lead the brands charts with over 86,000 sales. Toyota (-1.3%) reclaims the #2 spot it holds year-to-date off Skoda (+4.1%) and despite a YoY loss. Just below, BMW (+8.6%) is strong and repeats at #4, well ahead of Mercedes (-1%) and Audi (-2.1%). Hyundai (+14.6%), Dacia (+8.1%) and Renault (+6.1%) are solid in the remainder of the Top 10 whereas Peugeot (-5.8%) disappoints at #10. Cupra (+55.5%), MG (+37.2%) and Citroen (+34.6%) shoot up and all fit withing the Top 16. Tesla (-22.7%) is hit hard at #17 vs. #21 so far this year just as Fiat (+10.2%) posts a rare YoY gain and ranks #18. BYD (+217.3%) is the biggest gainer further down and ranks #22 like last month, with Mini (+46.1%), newcomers Jaecoo (+5465.1%) and Omoda (+195.9%), Alfa Romeo (+65.3%) and Polestar (+40.8%) also impressive. Volkswagen (+45%) is the best-selling BEV brand above Tesla (-23%) and BMW (+7%)

Model-wise, the VW T-Roc (+14.3%) is the overall best-seller for the 2nd month in a row, with sales boosted by promotions on the outgoing generation. It’s the 6th time the T-Roc is #1 in Europe after July 2022, August 2022, July 2023, May 2024 and July 2025. Note 48% of the T-Roc’s European sales were generated in Germany this month. The Daca Sandero (-11.6%) falls heavily but stays in second place and remains the faraway leader year-to-date. The Toyota Yaris Cross repeats at a record #3, a ranking it also held in January 2024, July 2024, August 2024 and July 2025. The VW Tiguan jumps 23% to ensure the Top 4 is unchanged on last month. Excellent performance also by the Hyundai Tucson (+27.9%) landing at a record 6th place, also reached in May 2022. The Renault Clio (-0.7%) is back up six spots on last month to #5 and still ranks #2 year-to-date. The Tesla Model Y (-37%) is the #1 BEV model despite a harsh fall, distancing the Skoda Elroq and Tesla Model 3.
