Norway July 2025: BEVs at record 97.2% share, BYD hits all-time high share

New car sales in Norway are euphoric in July at +48.1% year-on-year to 9,563 units. To be fair, July 2025 was particularly weak The YTD volume is up an equally impressive +25.6% to 85,079. BEVs surge 56.6% to 9,291, hitting a new all time share record at 97.2% vs. 91.9% a year ago. They are up 38.1% so far this year to 80,040 units and 94.1% share vs. 85.6% over the same period in 2024. In contrast PHEVs are off -34% to just 101 sales, HEVs down -62.5% to 60, petrol at -44.4% to 25 and diesel at -47.6% to 86.
Volkswagen (+29.8%) leads the way in the brands charts for the 4th time this year with 11.7% share, still way behind the 14.1% it commands year-to-date. Volvo (+53.9%) and Skoda (+84.8%) also beat the market to round out the podium while Tesla (+83.4%) posts an unusually strong July volume as a large number of vehicles were delivered at the end of the month. MG is back up 7 spots to #5, distancing BMW (+2.1%) weak at #6. Mercedes (+203.8%) and Ford (+166.1%) also shine just as BYD (+167.1%) repeats at a record #8 and reaches an all-time high 4.8% share. All in all, Chinese carmakers hold a record 18.6% share, that’s more than double Japanese brands (8.3%).
The Tesla Model Y (+355.4%) is boosted by late month deliveries to hold onto the top spot if the models charts. The Skoda Enyaq (+54.7%) is up five spots on June to #2 while the VW ID.4 (-31.2%) is in difficulty at #3, a ranking it also holds YTD. The new BYD Sealion 7 is up to #4 and accounts for 82% of the brand’s volume for the month. The Volvo EX40 (+108.1%) and VW ID.7 (+293.3%) surge ahead as do the Ford Explorer (+1247.4%) and VW ID.3 (+121.6%) in the remainder of the Top 10. A Top 10 in which the new Volvo EX90 breaks into for the first time at #8. Notice also the Xpeng G6 (+1114.3%) up to #11.
