Japan June 2025: Toyota Raize threatens Yaris/Cross for 1st place

Toyota Raize sales are up 390.6% year-on-year in June.

The Japanese new vehicle market is up 5.2% year-on-year in June to 393,160 units. Toyota (+4.7%) remains above the 30% share mark at 30.4%, selling almost double any other manufacturer in the country. Suzuki (+5.8%) stays in 2nd place while Daihatsu (+39.1%), catching up on weak year-ago volumes, overtakes Honda (-16.8%) for third place. Nissan (-3.7%) also struggles at #5. Outstanding performances below by Mitsubishi (+47.1%) and Mazda (+22.4%). Further down and among foreigners, notice Mini (+220.7%), Peugeot (+60%), Land Rover (+27.3%) and Volkswagen (+22.9%). Finally BYD (+245%) passes the 500 monthly sales milestone for the first time. A tiny volume in this market, but notable nevertheless.

Model-wise, the Toyota Yaris/Cross (-2%) is now threatened by the Toyota Raize (+390.6%) just below in 2nd place. The Toyota Corolla/Cross (-20.2%) is in great difficulty again but rallies back up three spots on last month to #3. Toyota monopolises the Top 6 with the Roomy (+16.7%), Sienta (-6.7%) and Voxy (+14.1%) in tow. The Honda Freed (-5.2%) is the best of the rest at #7 ahead of the Nissan Note (-15.6%). Great performers include the Daihatsu Rocky (+166.6%), Toyota Prius (+139.8%), Suzuki Jimny Wagon (+112%), Subaru Forester (+62.7%) and Mitsubishi Delica D5 (+39.9%).

Over in the kei cars charts, the Honda N-BOX (-3.8%) edges down but remains the most popular vehicle in the country all categories included. The Daihatsu Move (+252.4%) moves up four spots on last month to a splendid 2nd place both in the kei car arena and the overall ranking, with a new generation, the 7th, hitting dealerships this month. The Suzuki Spacia (-5.5%) and Daihatsu Tanto (-5.9%) follow but are both weak. The best performances in market are delivered by the Toyota Pixis (+79.4%), Mitsubishi Delica Mini/eK (+64.4%), Nissan Roox (+38.7%) and Subaru Chiffon (+34.7%). A new generation Subaru Stella lands at #22.

Over Q2 in the foreigners ranking, the Mini lineup (+101%) sails off in the distance, followed by the VW Golf (+53.3%) and Mercedes GLC (+14.1%). The Audi A3 (+59.5%) and VW T-Cross (+36.8%) round out the Top 5, distancing the BMW X1 and Mercedes G-Class (+102.4%). The Audi A5 makes its first appearance in the Top 20, directly at #9, with the VW Tiguan returning among the 20 most popular foreign models in the country.
