India First Half 2025: Mahindra (+20.3%) passes Hyundai, Tata, Maruti Suzuki Wagon R #1
The Thar (+60.1%) helps propel Mahindra to #2 in the brands charts.
The Indian new wholesales market edges up 1.3% year-on-year over the First Half of 2025 to reach a record 2,188,990 units. Maruti Suzuki (-2.2%) can’t capitalise on the market’s growth and sees its share thaw from 41.6% to a still overwhelming 40.1%. Mahindra (+20.3%) is the star of the year, leapfrogging past Hyundai (-7.7%) and Tata (-7.9%) to reach the 2nd place overall. The next four carmakers are all behaving fantastically. Skoda (+134.1%) is up to unheard-of heights thanks to the launch of the new Kylaq which aczoyuntns for 66% of the brand’s volumes over H1. MG (+18.6%), Toyota (+15.4%) and Kia (+12.7%) also excel. In contrast Renault (-30.6%), Citroen (-27.2%), Nissan (-22.1%), Jeep (-20.5%) and Honda (-16.3%) all disappoint.
Model-wise, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R (+1.8%) edges up to pole position despite ranking #1 only in January. The Wagon R has topped the annual Indian charts before: in 2021 and 2022. Less than 1,000 sales below is the Hyundai Creta (+10.1%) which ranked #1 three times over the period: in March, April and June. The Maruti Suzuki DZire (+2.4%) advances to #3 thanks to a new generation and ranked #1 in May. The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza (+4%), Swift (+10.6%), Ertiga (+4.1%) and Fronx (+14.4%) follow. Leader over the Full Year 2024, the Tata Punch (-23.3%) collapses to #10 over H1 2025. The Mahindra Thar (+60.1%) is up 10 spots to #13, with the Mahindra XUV300/3X0 (+37.1%) and Toyota Hyryder (+19.9%) also very dynamic. The Kia Syros (#29) is the best-selling recent launch above the Skoda Kylaq (#31), MG Windsor (#33) and Tata Curvv (#35).
