Germany June 2025: Market falls -13.8%, VW off -20.7%, Opel Corsa on podium

The Opel Corsa signs its first podium finish in over two years.

256,193 new cars found a German buyer in June, a harsh -13.8% year-on-year fall. The H1 2025 volume is down -4.7% to 1,402,789. This is to be compared with pre-pandemic June 2019 levels of 325,231 sales for the month (-21.2%) and 1,849,000 YTD (-24.1%). BEV sales grow 8.6% to 47,163 and 18.4% share vs. 14.6% a year ago and are up 35.1% YTD to 248,726 and 17.7% share vs. 12.5% over the same period in 2024. PHEVs surge 66.4% to 25,608 and 10% share vs. 5.2% in June 2025 and are up 55.1% over H1 to 138,905 and 9.9% share vs. 6.1% last year.

Brand leader Volkswagen (-20.7%) falls markedly faster than the market, resulting in a reduced 18.8% share vs. 20.4% so far this year (-1.1%). Mercedes (+4.9%) and BMW (+5.2%) both defy the negative context, scoring the only two year-on-year gains in the Top 13. Their market share however is nothing flashy at 8.7% and 8.6% respectively, close to their YTD levels. Skoda (-9.8%) improves its share slightly to 7.9% while Audi (-20%) is in total perdition at #5. Opel (-10.2%), Ford (-4.7%) and Hyundai (-5.9%) all resist better than the market, while Dacia (-12.1%) is back inside the German Top 10 for the first time this year at #9. BYD (+294.1%) ends the month just 185 sales below Tesla (-60%), with GWM (+256.2%), Mini (+32.3%) and Mitsubishi (+22.4%) also managing significant lifts. We welcome Chinese brand Firefly with its first sale.

Over in the models charts, the VW Golf (-12.7%) lodges a 9th consecutive monthly win but drops to 2.9% share. It is followed by the VW T-Roc (-29.3%) which was #1 a year ago in June 2024. The Opel Corsa (+33.5%) climbs up six spots on May to land in third place, the nameplate’s first podium finish since ranking #1 outright in April 2023. The VW Tiguan (-19.4%) is relegated to #4 but still ranks #3 year-to-date. The BMW X1 (+48.6%) continues to progress, hitting #5 for the 2nd time in the past 3 months. The Fiat Ducato (+16.3%) and BMW 5 Series (+97.9%) also impress in the remainder of the Top 10. Below, the Opel Mokka (+52%), Mini lineup (+32.3%) and Audi A6 (+29.7%) make themselves noticed. The VW Tayron (#18) is the most popular recent launch ahead of the Skoda Elroq (#26), Cupra Terramar (#48) and Hyundai Inster (#65). Notice also the BYD Dolphin Surf up to #107 for its first full month of sales.
