Switzerland April 2025: Mercedes GLC scores first ever win

The Mercedes GLC is also #1 year-to-date in Switzerland.

It’s a disappointing month for the Swiss new car market with sales off -6.9% year-on-year in April to 18,664. This way, the year-to-date tally after four months is down -7.6% to 71,354. Sales of electrified vehicles defy the negative context and all end the month in positive. HEVs are up 7.2% to 6,841 and 36.7% share vs. 31.8% a year ago, PHEVs grow 15.3% to 1,975 and 10.6% share vs. 8.5% and BEVs are up 9.5% to 18.6% share vs. 15.9%. Meanwhile petrol sales are off -25.1% to 5,027 and 26.9% vs. 33.5% and diesel is down -34.7% to 1,340 and 7.2% share vs. 10.2%. 4×4 sales dip -10.8% to 9,421 and 50.5% share vs. 52.7% a year ago.

In the brands ranking, BMW (+6.5%) reclaims the top spot it holds year-to-date, signing its 2nd win this year after last January and 4th over the past 12 months (add May and August 2024). Volkswagen (-1.2%) is relegated to 2nd place ahead of a struggling Skoda (-19.1%). Audi (+17.5%) is very solid in 4th place, Mercedes (-6.9%) matches the market but Toyota (-20.4%) sinks. Excellent performances by Renault (+41.2%), Dacia (+5.6%) and Hyundai (+1.4%). Below, notice Cupra (+130.7%) outselling sister brand Seat (-26.1%) for the third month running. Tesla is down -49.6%.

Model-wise, the Mercedes GLC (+2.5%) is the most popular vehicle in the country for the very first time and a 2% share is enough to achieve this. Its previous best ranking in Switzerland was #2, hit in September 2020, August 2024 and March 2025. The GLC cements its YTD domination, also with 2% share. The Audi Q3 (+2.5%) is also up one spot on last month to #2 while the VW Tiguan (-33.1%) rounds out the podium. The Skoda Octavia (-60.2%) is hit hard at #4 and ranks #6 year-to-date vs. #2 over the Full Year 2024. The BMW 1 Series (+103.4%) and Mini Hatch (+42.9%) also make themselves noticed. The Tesla Model Y is off -52.2% to #24 and ranks #7 year-to-date (-61.9%).
