Sweden March 2025: Volvo XC60 clear leader, Tesla down -63.9%

The Volvo XC60 is the most popular vehicle at home.

New car sales in Sweden edge up 1.3% year-on-year in March to 24,204 units, leading to a year-to-date tally up 6.1% to 63,444. Rechargeable cars gain 5.8% to 14,702 sales and 60.7% share vs. 58.1% a year ago. This is split between 8,386 BEVs (+0.6%) at 34.6% share vs. 34.9% in March 2024 and 6,316 PHEVs (+13.8%) at 26.1% share vs. 23.2% last year.

The Top 6 brands all beat the market. Volvo (+7.1%) stays on top with 17.6% share ahead of Volkswagen (+62.8%) at 14.4%. Toyota (+17.8%) rounds out the podium above Mercedes (+18.6%), a surging Skoda (+92.3%) and Audi (+12.6%). In contrast Tesla (-63.9%) completely implodes and falls to #10, ranking #11 year-to-date vs. #3 over the Full Year 2024. Kia (-24.3%) is also in difficulty while BMW (-1.2%) edges down and Peugeot (+10.8%) is solid. Polestar (+32.8%) scores another strong result at #12.

The Volvo XC60 (+49.2%) is a distant leader with 6.7% share and 7% year-to-date, followed like last month by the Volvo XC40 (+20.3%) also in outstanding shape. Uncontested leader a year ago, the Tesla Model Y (-61.9%) sinks to third place and ranks #5 year-to-date. The VW ID.7 (+1794.1%) confirms its popularity at 2.7% share in 4th position and #3 so far this year while a struggling Volvo S/V60 (-30.5%) struggles at #5. Below, the VW Passat (+197%), Skoda Kodiaq (+177.8%), VW ID.3 (+104.6%) and Skoda Enyaq (+103.2%) all manage splendid upticks.
