Taiwan January 2024: Toyota and Lexus at all time high
Lexus is above 10% share in Taiwan for the first time.
New cars sales in Taiwan are down -21.8% year-on-year in January to 35,064 units, impacted by the timing of the lunar new year which fell in late January this year vs. February in 2024. Toyota (+3.9%) defies the negative market and surges to 36.4% share vs. 27.3% over the Full Year 2024. This is simply the brand’s highest share since we started following Taiwan monthly in January 2014. The previous best was 33.8% in July 2014. Lexus (+16.7%) does even better and climbs to 10.2% share, here too a new record and for the first time above 10%, smashing its previous best of 8.7% hit in February 2023. All remaining Top 10 members bar Mazda (+30.1%) are in negative, with Honda (-59.2%), Hyundai (-54.6%) and Nissan (-41.8%) the hardest hit. Mercedes (-4.3%) and CMC (-11.9%) both resist.
Model-wise, the Toyota Corolla Cross (+36.8%) is up to 12.4% share, its second best ever below the 13.4% from November 2020. The Toyota RAV4 (+33.7%) also shines at 6% of the market, followed by the Toyota Yaris Cross (+4%). The Lexus NX (+26.5%) hits its highest ranking since June 2023 #4 and its best-ever share at 4.6%. The Toyota Town Ace (-24.2%) is in difficulty at #5. Newcomer the CMC J Space repeats at a record #6 and smashes its share record at 4%. Notice also the Mercedes GLC (-1.1%) up 13 spots on last month to #8 and the Lexus RX (+20.5%) up 21 to #9.
