USA Full Year 2024: Ford F-Series #1 for 43rd year, Toyota RAV4 on podium

The U.S. new light vehicle market gains 2.2% year-on-year in 2024 to 15.9 million units according to data by Wards Intelligence. This the highest annual volume since 2019. Hybrids helped lift the market up at +36.7% vs. 2023 while BEVs remain at very low levels at 1.3 million units and 8.2% share vs. 1.2 million and 7.6% share last year. General Motors stays the most popular OEM with sales up 4.3%, followed by Toyota Motor (+3.7%), Ford Motor (+4.2%), Hyundai-Kia (+3.4%) and American Honda (+8.8%), all beating the market. Stellantis (-14.6%) struggles mightily and falls to #6 in the groups ranking.
Brand-wise, Toyota (+3%) is the best-seller, with a small 26,600 unit advantage over Ford (+3.2%), this gap was 28,700 in 2023. Chevrolet edges up 1.8% in third place above Nissan (+3.8%) and Hyundai (+4.4%). Kia (+1.8%) is more reserved at #7 just as Subaru (+5.6%) leaps up two spots to #8. Tesla (-6%) is the only Top 10 carmaker in negative and drops one rank to #9. GMC (+8.9%) is very solid and rounds out the Top 10. Illustrating Stellantis’ trouble, Jeep (-8.6%) and Ram (-18.6%) both record significant drops. Mazda (+16.8%), Volkswagen (+15.2%), Buick (+9.8%) and Cadillac (+8.8%) stand out in the remainder of the Top 20.
The Ford F-Series has been #1 in the US without interruption since 1982.
Over in the models charts, the Ford F-Series (+2%) matches the market and delivers a 43rd year in a row at #1 (no interruption since 1982), and 48th consecutive year as the best-selling pickup truck (since 1977). The F-Series once again extends its lead over the #2, the Chevrolet Silverado (+1.1%) to almost 216,000 units vs. 207,000 in 2023. The Toyota RAV4 (+9.3%) is up one spot to land on the US podium for the first time in the nameplate’s history. The Honda CR-V (+11.4%) follows at a distance and is up two ranks to #4, edging past the Tesla Model Y (-0.4%) which stays at #5. The big loser this year is the Ram Pickup (-16.1%) freefalling from #3 in 2023 to #6 this year. Meanwhile the GMC Sierra (+9.8%) holds onto the 7th spot.
The Toyota Camry (+6.6%) bounces back up to stay at #8 and holds the passenger car crown for the 23rd consecutive year and the 27th time in the past 28 years (only interruption by the Honda Accord in 2001). This way, 2024 marks the 28th year in a row the best-selling passenger car in the USA is Japanese: the last American sedan to be crowned #1 was the Ford Taurus in 1996. This time there are two passenger cars in the Top 10, with the Honda Civic (+20.8%) rallying back up six spots on 2023 to #10. However there are still only 5 in the Top 25 just as the Nissan Sentra (+39.8%) replaces the Tesla Model 3 (-32.7%).
