It’s a disappointing year for the Swedish new car market, down -7% to 269,498. This is the weakest annual volume in 11 years, since the 269,363 units of 2013, which itself was the lowest since 2009. Rechargeable cars hold 58.4% of the market vs. 59.8% in 2023. In the detail, BEVs are off -15.9% to 94,332 and 35% share vs. 38.7% a year ago whereas PHEVs edge up 3.3% to 63,087 and 23.4% share vs. 21.1%. As a result the average emissions increased by around 3 grams of carbon dioxide compared to 2023 to 64 grams per km.
Local behemoth Volvo (+13.7%) defies its home market with a double-digit gain and improves its share from 14.3% to 17.4%. In contrast Volkswagen (-11%) skids to 10.8% share vs. 11.3% a year ago. Tesla (+7.7%) is solid and rounds out the podium, up from #5 in 2023. Toyota (-10.7%) and Kia (-21.5%) struggle but Mercedes (+14%) shines. Further down, Peugeot (+24.2%), Polestar (+62.4%) up seven spots to #11 and Cupra (+42%) up four ranks to #12, all impress. Zeekr lands directly at #28 with 0.4% share but is up to 0.9% in December.
The Tesla Model Y (+11.5%) is #1 for the second year in a row, augmenting its share from 5.7% to 6.8% and peaking at an incredible 16% in September, a new record. Volvo monopolises the rest of the Top 5 with the XC60 (+28.9%) up one spot on last year to #2, the XC40 (-40.8%) down one to #3, the EX30 (+8665.4%) up to #4 for its first full year of sales and the S/V60 (+29.1%) up three ranks to #5. The Toyota RAV4 (-12.8%) and VW ID.4 (-54.7%) are the best of the rest but both post weak results. The Polestar 2 (+16.7%) breaks into the Top 10 for the first time at #9. Notice also the VW ID.7 at #16 but up to #4 in October and December.
