South Africa Full Year 2024: Toyota Hilux and VW Polo Vivo most popular

515,712 new vehicle found a South African buyer in 2024, a -3% year-on-year decrease. However, thanks to strong seasonal sales to the vehicle rental industry, easing inflation and two interest rate cuts, H2 sales were encouraging which bodes well for 2025. Cars are up 1.1% to 351,302 whereas Light Commercials sink -12% to 133,254. Toyota (-9.8%) easily retains the manufacturers top spot despite falling faster than the market and seeing its share reduce from 26.8% to 24.9%. The Volkswagen Group (-1.4%) does slightly better at 12.9% share. Most impressive is Suzuki, up 20.5% to 11.6% share vs. 9.3% last year. Chery (+24.9%) also shines and breaks into the Top 10 at #8 while Ford (+6.7%) and Isuzu (+0.6%) also post positive results. 

Model-wise, the Toyota Hilux (-13.1%) lodges a 12th consecutive year in pole position but sees its market share thaw from 7.1% last year to 6.3%. The Hilux was #1 for 11 month, with the VW Polo Vivo (+8.4%) taking the lead in November. The Polo Vivo, overtaking the Ford Ranger (+3.8%) to step up to #2 over the Full Year. The Toyota Corolla Cross (-3.2%) and Isuzu D-Max (+0.1%) camp on their 2023 ranking at #4 and #5 respectively. The Hyundai Grand i10 (+37.1%) soars 4 spots to #7 with the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro (+25.6%) also breaking into the Top 10 at #9. Other great performers include the Suzuki Fronx (#17), Baleno (+21.8%), Toyota Vitz (+35.4%) and Suzuki Ertiga (#20). The Toyota Starlet Cross (#27) is the best-selling 2024 launch, peaking at #8 in August.
