New Zealand Full Year 2024: Ford Ranger celebrates 10 straight years at #1

The New Zealand new vehicle market disappoints again in 2024 at -13.5% to 128,826 units, compared to a record 165,287 reached in 2021. SUV sales sink -15.8% to 70,879 and 55% share vs. 56.5% last year, light commercials actually improve 10.7% to 33,780 and 26.2% share vs. 20.5% in 2023 and passenger cars implode -37.7% to 16,238 and 12.6% share vs. 17.5% a year ago. Sales to rental companies drop -10.4% to 17,216 and 13.4% share vs. 12.9% last year.
Brand leader Toyota (-6.7%) falls slower than the market, resulting in an improved share a 23.5% vs. 21.7% in 2023. Ford (+9.9%) and Mitsubishi (+7.1%) defy the negative environment with solid lifts. Ford reaches 13.9% share vs. 10.9% in 2023 and Mitsubishi is at 11% vs. 8.9%. Kia (-13.8%) stays at #4 ahead of Suzuki (-23.8%) up one spot to #5, Nissan (-0.3%) up three to #6 and Hyundai (-46.3%) imploding to #7. Mazda (-6.5%) advances two spots to #8 with Volkswagen (-12.6%) and Honda (-13.2%) cracking the Top 10. Heroes of last year, MG (-51.4%) and BYD (-74%) collapse.
The Ford Ranger (+18.6%) celebrates 10 consecutive years as the country’s best-seller, a series started in 2015. The Ranger also manages its highest ever annual market share at 9.1%, smashing its previous best of 7.6% hit in 2021. The Toyota RAV4 (+20.3%) also shines and climbs to 8.2% share at #2, leaving the Toyota Hilux (-9.4%) a distant third. Mitsubishi monopolises the next three spots: the Triton (+36.3%) is up six spots to #4, the ASX surges from outside the 2023 Top 20 directly into 5th place and the Outlander (-20%) struggles at #6. Outstanding performances also by the Kia Seltos (+86%), Nissan Navara (+65.4%) and Ford Everest (+29%).
The Toyota RAV4 is the most popular vehicle with rental car companies, with one in every five rentals. The Mitsubishi Outlander, Ford Ranger and Mitsubishi ASX follow.
