Switzerland October 2024: VW Tiguan best-seller, sales off -7.9%

The VW Tiguan is the most popular vehicle in Switzerland in October.

The Swiss new car market falls -7.9% year-on-year in October to 18,753 units, leading to a year-to-date tally off -4.3% to 194,483. 4×4 sales drop -10.2% to 9,764 and 52.1% share vs. 53.4% a year ago but resist -1.9% year-to-date to 101,093 and 52% share vs. 50.7% over the first 10 months of 2023. Petrol sinks -21.4% to 4,960 and 26.4% share vs. 31% in October 2023, diesel is down -8.1% to 1,605 and 8.6% share, but HEVs surge 19.7% to 6,861 and 36.6% share vs. 28.2%. PHEVs are off -14.5% to 1,763 and 9.4% share vs. 10.1% and BEVs sink -20.9% to 3,564 and 19% share vs. 22.1%. Keep in mind BEVs were up 87% on the year prior in October 2023. Year-to-date BEV registrations are down -10.7% to 36,366 and 18.7% vs. 20% over the same period last year. 

Volkswagen (-24.7%) freefalls year-on-year and holds onto the brands top spot for only 26 sales above Mercedes (+12.3%) in outstanding shape. Skoda (-2%) and BMW (-2.3%) both fall slower than the market while Audi (-8.2%) matches it. Toyota (+22%) scores the largest gain in the Top 10 ahead of Hyundai (+17.2%) with Renault (+14.9%) and Dacia (+8.1%) also strong.  

Model-wise, the VW Tiguan (+13.5%) is up two spots on last month to lodge its first victory since July 2022, it remains #3 year-to-date. The Toyota Yaris (+66.1%) surges 11 ranks on September to land in 2nd place while the Skoda Karoq (+57.9%) is up one to round out the podium. The Mercedes GLC (+22%) also shines and advances to #4 year-to-date. Excellent showing for the Dacia Duster (+98.2%) up 21 spots to #6, as well as the BMW X1 (+50.5%), Skoda Kodiaq (+25.1%) and VW Golf (+23.4%). The Tesla Model Y (-35%) is down to #29 but stays #1 year-to-date with sales up 10%.
