Switzerland September 2024: Skoda (+16.6%) shines, Tesla Model Y distant leader
The Skoda Karoq ranks #4 in Switzerland in September.
The Swiss new car market edges down -6.6% year-on-year in September to 20,155 units. This means the year-to-date tally is now off -3.9% to 175,730. 4×4 sales are down just -2.5% to 10,676, improving their share to 53% vs. 50.7% a year ago in September 2023. Year-to-date 4×4 registrations are off -1% to 91,329 and 52% share vs. 50.4% last year. BEVs fall faster than the market at -11.2% to 4,560 and 22.6% share vs. 23.8% in September 2023 and drop -9.5% YTD to 32,802 and 18.7% share vs. 19.8%. Meanwhile HEVs surge 20.5% to 6,972 and 34.6% share vs. 26.8% and are up 15.4% YTD to 57,455 and 32.7% share vs. 27.2%. PHEVs sink -18.3% to 1,704 and 8.5% share vs. 9.7% and are off -6.7% YTD to 15,118 and 8.6% share vs. 8.9%. Petrol drops -22.5% to 5,232 and 26% share vs. 31.3% and skids -15.9% YTD to 53,145 and 30.2% share vs. 34.5% and diesel is down -7.7% to 1,683 and 8.4% share vs. 8.5% and edges down -1.4% to 17,191 and 9.8% share vs. 9.5% over the same period in 2023.
Over in the brands charts, Volkswagen (-7.9%) reclaims the top spot off BMW (+0.6%) at 10.1% share and marginally augment its advantage YTD. In fact BMW is down to #3 this month, surpassed by Skoda (+16.6%) up two spots on last month to #2. Mercedes is stable year-on-year but drops two ranks on August to #4. Audi (+5.7%) and Tesla (+5.8%) both defy the negative market below. Volvo (+12.7%) also impresses at #9 while further down Subaru (+59.3%), Land Rover (+28.9%) Suzuki (+17.7%) and Mitsubishi (+13.1%) stand out. The Chinese struggle with MG at #34 with 0.3% share, BYD at #4 and just 8 sales and Voyah at #51 with 5 units sold.
Model-wise, the Tesla Model Y (+4.3%) is a distant leader at 4.1 share above the BMW X1 (+119.3%) and VW Tiguan (+20.1%). The Skoda Karoq (+78.2%) and Audi Q3 (+33.8%). The Mercedes GLC (+7.6%) is strong but drops four spots on August to #6. Skoda also places the Enyaq (-42.7%), Octavia (+6.9%) and Kodiaq (+107.5%) inside the Top 10. The Volvo EX30 seems to have peaked out, down six ranks to #9.
