Norway September 2024: BEVs break share record again at 96.4%
The Tesla Model 3 reaches its 2nd highest market share at 15.9%
12,966 new cars hit Norwegian roads in September, a sturdy 25.4% year-on-year improvement. Keep in mind the year-ago basis was particularly low as the market dropped -29.4% on the year prior. Year-to-date sales remain in negative at -3.9% to 91,798. For the second month in a row, BEVs reach a record market share in September at 96.4% vs. 87% a year ago thanks to sales up 38.8% to 12,495. The previous record of 94.3% reached last month is eclipsed. Year-to-date BEV sales are up 1.6% to 80,939 and 88.2% share vs. 83.4% over the same period in 2023. PHEVs sink -76.3% to 146 and 1.1% share vs. 6% a year ago, HEVs drop -67.6% to 1.1% vs. 4.3%, petrol sales are at 0.4% share and diesel is at 1%. 4×4 account for 69.6% share vs. 69.1% in 2023 and 68.3% year-to-date.
Tesla (+68.4%) soars to 32.5% share thanks to 4,210 sales, that’s over four times the #2 Volvo (+74.7%) also in outstanding shape. This is Tesla’s highest market share in Norway since March 2023 (40.8%) which is still a record. Volumes remain down -17% year-to-date. Volkswagen (+73.9%) closes out the podium in stellar fashion with Skoda (+6.4%) shy at #4. Two more Top 10 members outpace the market: BMW (+74.2%) and Audi (+68.5%). Mercedes (+14.8%) and Hyundai (+12.8%) are in positive but below the market rate whereas Toyota (-17.9%) and Nissan (-1.9%) frankly underperform. Xpeng (+1572.2%) breaks its ranking record at #11, distancing BYD (+344.6%).
Model-wise, the Tesla Model Y (-14.9%) reaches 16.3% share but declines year-on-year with its YTD tally off -34.7% to 13.9% share. The Tesla Model 3 (+17125%) goes from 12 sales in September 2023 and hits 15.9% share, its 2nd highest below the 20.6% it reached in artificially boosted December 2020. The Volvo EX30 drops to #3 ahead of the Skoda Enyaq (+6.6%). The next five models all clearly beat the market: the BMW i4 (+179.6%) is the most dynamic followed by the VW ID.3 (+117.4%), ID.4 (+88.7%), Nissan Ariya (+45.3%) and Toyota bZ4X (+39.6%). The new Xpeng G6 is up 24 spots on August to a record 13th place.
