Switzerland August 2024: Tesla Model Y #1, first podium for the Volvo EX30

The Volvo EX30 ranks #3 in Switzerland in August.

The Swiss new car market is hit a harsh -16.1% year-on-year in August to 15,927 sales, leading to a year-to-date volume off -3.6% to 155,575. 4×4 sales are down -14.7% to 8,056 and 50.6% share vs. 49.7% in August 2023 and drop -0.8% YTD to 80,653 and 51.8% share vs. 50.4% over the first 8 months of 2023. Petrol sales are down -29.4% to 4,261, diesel is down -20.3% to 1,410 but HEVs are up 8.5% to 5,604 and 35.2% share vs. 27.2% a year ago. BEVs sink -20.2% to 3,421 and 21.5% share vs. 22.6% and PHEVs are off -28.2% to 1,231. Year-to-date, BEVs drop -9.2% to 28,242 and 18.2% share vs. 19.3% over the same period in 2023.

BMW (-15.7%) snaps the brands top spot for the 4th time this year after January, February and May and despite a significant year-on-year drop. Mercedes (+8%) defies the negative market to stay at #2, overtaking Volkswagen (-29.7%), crashing. It also ranked at a low #3 in January and February this year. Skoda (+3.4%) is also in good shape and passes Audi (-17.5%) to rank #4 overall. Volvo (+32%) delivers the largest year-on-year gain in the Top 35 at #8. Tesla (-20.9%) climbs back up to #9 with Dacia (-9.6%) rounding out the Top 10. Mitsubishi (+26.2%), Suzuki (+24.5%) and Peugeot (+5.6%) shine below.

The Tesla Model Y (-31.4%) freefalls but manages to hold the pole position this month as well as year-to-date. The Mercedes GLC (-17.1%) is up one spot on July to #2 while the Volvo EX30 is up three to score its first ever Swiss podium finish at #3. The Kia Sportage (+163%) is up a spectacular 40 ranks on last month to #4 just as a diving Skoda Octavia (-28%) rounds out the Top 5, managing to keep the #2 ranking year-to-date. Outstanding performances by the Skoda Karoq (+78.4%), Kodiaq (+70.9%) and Dacia Duster (+47.7%) is the remainder of the Top 10.
