Portugal August 2024: Dacia Sandero #1, BYD breaks records

BYD holds 2.6% of the Portuguese market in August.

The Portuguese new car market drops -9.4% year-on-year in August to 11,822 units. The year-to-date volume is now up 2.5% to 142,789. Peugeot (-15.9%) retains the top spot it holds year-to-date despite a significant dent in its sales. Mercedes (+5.2%) also stays #2 ahead of Dacia (+14.3%), both manufacturers defying the negative context. Below BMW (-9.7%) matching the market, the rest of the Top 10 are all in positive: Volkswagen (+28.8%), Seat (+26.2%), Toyota (+25.5%), Hyundai (+19.9%), Renault (+16.5%) and Volvo (+8.4%) all in excellent shape. The performer of the month is BYD up an extravagant 1588.9% year-on-year to #13 with 304 sales and 2.6% share, all new records. Tesla is down -84.5%.

Over in the models charts, the Dacia Sandero (-21.3%) returns to the top spot it also holds year-to-date despite a steep year-on-year fall. The Peugeot 2008 (+32.1%) is relegated to #2 like YTD. #1 a year ago, the Peugeot 208 (-39.9%) freefalls to #3. In contrast the Dacia Duster (+285.4%), Ford Puma (+76.5%) and Renault Clio (+61.7%) all lodge fantastic gains below. The Mercedes A-Class (+11.7%) is solid also at #7 with the new Volvo EX30 down two spots on July to a still very impressive 8th place. The VW Taigo (+327.3%), Toyota Yaris Cross (+194.7%) and Renault Captur (+40%) shine further down. The MG 4 (+390.6%) is up to #17 and the BYD Atto 3 (+815.4%) up to #24.
