Netherlands August 2024: Tesla Model Y and Volvo EX30 on top

The EX30 accounts for 46% of Volvo sales in the Netherlands in August.

New car sales in the Netherlands are stable in August at -0.4% year-on-year to 27,623. However the year-to-date volume is in negative at -3.7% to 247,464. Hybrids hold a booming 44% of the market thanks to 12,155 sales this month, BEVs are at 34.1% and 9,416 sales, petrol at 20.4% and 5,636, diesel at 0.9% and 249 and LPG at 0.6% and 166 sales.

Kia (-5.4%) retains the brands top spot with 10.1% share and despite a relatively significant year-on-year drop. It is followed by Toyota (-14.2%) in worse shape. Volvo (+357%) surges year-on-year to #3 but at 7.4%, its share is well below the 9% it commands year-to-date. BMW (+12.8%) and Renault (+26.7%) round out the Top 5, both in excellent shape. Ford (+16.1%) and Hyundai (+11.7%) also make themselves noticed in the remainder of the Top 10 while further down Mercedes (+30.9%), Suzuki (+48.5%) and Mini (+67.7%) stand out. BYD (+916.2%) breaks into the Top 20 for the first time at #20, ranking #1 Chinese as MG (-56.7%) plummets.

Model-wise, the Tesla Model Y (-13.2%) posts a lesser fall than in other European markets so far and lodges its 4th win of the year with 3.9% share. Note its sales are actually up 16.8% year-to-date. The new Volvo EX30 confirms its instant blockbuster status at #2 and ranks #4 year-to-date. #1 last month, the Kia Niro (+30.4%) falls to #3 in August but holds onto the 2nd spot YTD where its sales are up a stunning 82.7%. Tough times for the Kia Picanto (-34.8%) at #4, ranking ahead of the Hyundai i10 (+82.9%), VW Polo (+14.7%) and Ford Kuga (+17.1%) all in excellent shape. The Renault Scenic E-Tech is the second best-selling recent launch at a record #20.
