Sweden June 2024: Polestar breaks all records
Polestar 3
It’s a second difficult month in a row for the Swedish new car market in June at -10.2% year-on-year to 25,401 units. This way, the year-to-date tally is off -5.9% to 132,294. Sales of BEVs are down -16.8% to 9,118 and 35.9% share vs. 38.7% a year ago and off -19.9% year-to-date to 41,998 and 31.7% share vs. 37.3% over H1 2023. PHEVs are also in difficulty at -9.6% to 5,240 and 20.6% share vs. 20.5% but are up 6.2% YTD to 30,930 and 23.4% share vs. 20.7% last year. Local behemoth Volvo (+20.1%) defies its home market to post the best year-on-year performance in the Top 8 but can only muster 15.5% share vs. 17.9% over H1. Volkswagen (-18.9%) suffers but stays #2 while Tesla (-9.5%) is back up to #3 and limits its fall to just under the market rate. Mercedes (+1.6%) edges up to #5 just as Peugeot (+51.5%) excels at #9. The largest gainer in the Top 10 and Top 35 is Polestar up 120.9% to #10 with 994 sales and 3.8% share, all new records. This comes at a time when Volvo is looking to divest in the brand following poor sales.
The Tesla Model Y (-10.8%) manages to march the market, unlike in other European markets so far where it falls heavily. As a result it reclaims the YTD top spot for just 7 sales above the Volvo XC60 (+25.6%) in excellent shape again this month at #2. The Polestar 2 (+108.2%) surges eight spots on May to round out the podium for the first time, its previous best being #5 in May 2023. Like the brand, the Polestar 2 breaks its ranking, volume and share records this month. The VW ID.4 (-25.1%) sinks year-on-year but climbs four ranks on last month to #4. It distances an outstanding Volvo S/V60 (+42.8%). The new Volvo EX30 drops one spot to #6 at a still impressive 2.6% share. The Tesla Model 3 is actually up: +19 ranks on last month to #7 and +32.8% year-on-year. It ranks #14 year-to-date vs. #21 over the Full Year 2023.
