20,040 new cars hit Swiss roads in April, that’s 10.4% more than in April 2023. The year-to-date volume tilts back into positive at +0.4% to 77,264. 4×4 registrations gain 11.5% year-on-year to 10,567 and 52.7% share vs. 52.2% a year ago and are up 5% year-to-date to 40,782 and 52.8% share vs. 50.5%. Skoda (+32.2%) tops the Swiss brands ranking for the second time in history after January 2022. The Czech brand holds a record 10.8% of the market vs. 9% so far this year, making this month only its second one above 10% alongside May 2021 (10.1%). Volkswagen (+11.4%) roughly matches the market and ends the month at a round 10% share vs 9.3% year-to-date. BMW (+37.7%) advances the fastest on the podium, reaching 9.8% share vs. 9.2% YTD. Note that in the YTD charts, VW dominates by just 56 sales above BMW and 245 above Skoda. Volvo (+79.3%) is the biggest gainer in the Top 10 with Dacia (+39.6%) and Porsche (+37.3%) also in excellent shape. This is already Porsche’s 2nd Top 10 finish of the year (it ranked #9 in January).
Predictably the Skoda Octavia (+131.6%) swells up to snap the models pole position with an excellent 3.9% share. That is 60% above the #2, the BMW X1 (+41.1%) also in fine form. The VW Tiguan (+94.7%) completes an over performing podium. Like in Scandinavia, the Volvo EX30 is an instant blockbuster and surges 40 spots on March to land at #4 with a round 2% share. It now ranks #15 year-to-date. The Tesla Model Y (+24.5%) is pushed down to #5 but remains in the YTD top spot and manages a year-on-year gain for the month unlike in many other European markets. The Dacia Sandero (+124.1%), Mercedes GLC (+59.2%), VW Golf (+42.8%) and Toyota Yaris (+20.8%) also shine in the remainder of the Top 10.
