Sweden April 2024: Volvo places four models in Top 5, sales up 6.7%
The Volvo XC60 is the most popular vehicle in Sweden in April.
New car sales in Sweden gain 6.7% year-on-year in April to 21,977 units, yet the year-to-date tally remains in negative at -2.5% to 81,799. Rechargeable cars hold 56.9% of the market vs. 55.7% a year ago, but EV sales drop -1.8% to 6,801 and 30.9% share vs. 33.6% in April. For their part PHEVs soar 25.6% to 5,713 and 26% share vs. 22.1% last year. The market share of rechargeable cars YTD is 55.2%, 30.9% go to EVs and 24.3% to PHEVs.
In the brands ranking, Volvo (+31.6%) surges ahead to 18% of the market, exactly the same share it holds YTD. In contrast Volkswagen (-17.7%) is in great difficulty at #2, distancing Toyota (+9.2%) and Kia (+7.8%) both solid and above the market growth rate. Tesla (+41.6%) and Peugeot (+34.3%) are the only additional gainers in the Top 10, with Audi (-27.1%), Skoda (-13.9%), BMW (-12.7%) and Mercedes (-2.6%) in decline. Below, Polestar (+292.5%), Mazda (+208.8%), Seat (+101.5%) and Cupra (+100.7%) all impress.
Model-wise, the Volvo XC60 (+30%) scores a third win in the past 4 months but stays below the Tesla Model Y (+28.5%) year-to-date. The Volvo EX30 is up two spots on last month to climb onto the podium for the first time. In fact Volvo places four models in the Top 5 this month: add the XC40 (-25.8%) at #4 and S/V60 (+81.5%) and #5. The rest of the Top 10 all beat the market, with the Polestar 2 (+261.7%) the most dynamic above the Kia Ceed (+68.8%), Kia Sportage (+41.1%), Toyota RAV4 (+32.4%) and Corolla (+7.9%).
