Belgium March/Q1 2024: Tesla Model Y and Volvo XC40 on top
The Tesla Model Y is the best-selling model in Belgium over Q1 2024.
It’s a tough month for Belgian new car sales: off -13.5% year-on-year to 44,751 in March. However the Q1 volume remains in positive at +2.8% to 135,140. This is the highest Q1 result since 2019. Over Q1, private sales account for 38.1% of the total amount, up from 31.2% in 2023 but down from 42.6% over pre-pandemic 2019. For the first time, electrified vehicle sales overtake ICE ones to hold 52.8% of the market. This is split between BEVs with 23% share, PHEVs at 20.4% and HEVs at 9.4%. Petrol sales hold 40.9% of the market and diesel is at 5.5%.
BMW (-17.2%) lodges a 6th consecutive monthly pole position with 9.9% share, distancing Volkswagen (-1.6%) resisting to 9% of the market and now also #2 year-to-date. Audi (+0.2%) is stable at #3 ahead of Mercedes (-8%). Tesla (+2.5%) climbs to #5, followed by Volvo (+29.3%) managing the largest year-on-year uptick in the Top 10 at #6. Toyota (+19.4%), Kia (+14.3%) and Dacia (+7.6%) also defy the declining market among the other Top 10 finishers. Below, Porsche (+28.2%), Hyundai (+23.2%) and Suzuki (+17.1%) stand out.
Model-wise, the Tesla Model Y (+51.9%) takes the lead with 3.5% share, that’s a full percentage point above its Full Year 2023 level. It distances the Volvo XC40 (+29.7%) and last year’s leader the BMW X1 (+65%). In fact the entire Top 7 models post fantastic double-digit gains. The Audi Q3 (+80.2%) is the most dynamic at #7, followed by the Dacia Sandero (+68.3%), Audi A3 (+63.3%) and Citroen C3 (+31.6%). The Tesla Model 3 (#11), BMW 4 Series (#13), Volvo XC60 (#15) and Hyundai Tucson (#19) make their entrance in the Top 20.
The Tesla Model Y tops the charts in Flanders, the Dacia Sandero is #1 in Wallonia and the Volvo X40 #1 in Brussels. Petrol sales by model are dominated by the Dacia Sandero and Citroen C3, diesel sales by the Peugeot 308 and Dacia Duster, BEVs by the Tesla Model Y and Volvo XC40, PHEVs by the Audi Q3 and BMW X1 and HEVs by the Toyota Yaris and Corolla. The BMW X1 is #1 in fleet sales and the Dacia Sandero #1 with private buyers.
