Sweden February 2024: Volvo XC60 repeats at #1, EX30 breaks into Top 10

The Volvo EX30 ranks #7 at home in February.

The Swedish new car market edges up 1.8% year-on-year in February to 18,766 sales, a lukewarm result given February 2023 was off -12.7% on the year prior. The year-to-date tally is up 8.7% to 35,930. BEV sales actually fall at -14.6% to 5,229 and 27.9% share vs. 33.2% a year ago, while PHEVs gain 16.9% to 4,492 and 23.9% share vs. 20.8% in February 2023. All in all, rechargeable vehicle sales drop -2.5% to 9,721 units and 51.8% share vs. 54% a year ago.

Volvo (+36.2%) vastly outpaces its home market to a very strong 19.6% vs. 14.3% over the Full Year 2023. Toyota (+10.4%) is also in great shape and overtakes Volkswagen (-17.9%) for the #2 spot overall. Kia (-23.3%) is also in trouble whereas Tesla (+104.2%) lodges the largest year-on-year gain in the Top 15 and climbs three spots on January to #5. Audi (+1.8%) matches the market in 6th place, distancing Mercedes (-4.2%) and BMW (-19.9%) both struggling. Further down, notice Subaru (+59.6%), Polestar (+47.1%), Lexus (+54.2%) and Cupra (+155.7%) all posting fantastic results. Chinese fare Zeekr lands at #33 with 53 sales.

Over in the models lane, the Volvo XC60 (+45.3%) surges year-on-year to repeat at #1 and cement its YTD leadership. In fact the entire podium beats the market with the Tesla Model Y (+225.8%) and Volvo S/V60 (+119.9%) both in outstanding shape. In contrast the Volvo XC40 (-27.7%) is in great difficulty and drops two spots on January to #4. The Toyota RAV4 (+42.2%) and Kia Ceed (-21%) follow with opposite fortunes. For its third month of sales the Volvo EX30 is up five ranks to a record 7th place, distancing the Polestar 2 (+47.1%), Toyota Yaris (+52.7%) and Subaru Outback (+54.9%). The Toyota Corolla (+249.3%), Peugeot 3008 (+129.7%) and Volvo C40 (+31.5%) also impress just below.
