Russia February 2024: Chinese brands over 50% share, Geely up to record #2
The new Geely Monjaro ranks #4 in Russia in February.
The Russian new car market is up 85.1% year-on-year in February to 103,954 units but off -9.1% on February 2022. Year-to-date volumes are up 81.7% to 184,166 and down -10.6% on 2022. Note: compared to last year our Russian data source has shifted to PPK JSC, which explains some inconsistencies vs. year ago figures. Lada (+33%) still leads the way but vastly trails its home market and sees its share freefall from 38.4% in February 2023 to 27.6% now. The vacuum is filled by Chinese brands which sport the next 8 brands, increasing their footprint in the country again this month. The 8 Chinese brands present in this month’s Top 10 account for 49.5% of the market which means they surpass 50% overall.
Geely (+276.5%) is up to #2 overall for the first time, overtaking sister brand Haval (+133.7%). Chery (+45.4%) is softer at #4 while Changan posts a surreal gain at +1169.7%. Exeed (+63.4) and Omoda (+71.4%) also can’t quite catch up on the market growth rate. Newcomers Lixiang and Tank repeat on their January positions just as Toyota (+13.6%) returns to the Top 10 after a three-month absence.
Over in the models lane, the Lada Granta is the only Top 10 member to see its volume drop year-on-year at -13.7% and sees its share implode from 27% in February 2023 to just 12.6% this month. The Lada Vesta is up an extravagant +1970.2% as its production had not yet resumed a year ago. The Haval Jolion (+123.6%) holds onto the title of best-selling foreigner at #3 but the new Geely Monjaro is catching up. The Lada Niva Travel (+18.7%) and Niva Legend (+74.6%) lose share vs. last year but the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Max (+292.8%) and Tiggo 4 Pro (+228.6%) both shoot up.
