Switzerland January 2024: BMW #1, Skoda places 3 models in Top 4 in negative market

BMW sales are up 12.3% year-on-year in January.

The Swiss new car market recedes by -7.3% year-on-year in January to 15,236 units. 4×4 sales edge down -2.1% to 8,041 and 52.8% share vs. 50% a year ago. In terms of sales by powertrain, petrol is down -15.9% to 4,965 units and 32.7% share vs. 35.9% in January 2023, diesel actually climbs up 4.3% to 1,698 and 11.1% share vs. 9.9% last year, HEV edges down -1% to 4,620 and 30.3% share vs. 28.4%, PHEV lifts 14.1% to 1,582 and 10.4% share vs. 8.4% and BEVs sink -16.8% to 2,364 and 15.5% share vs. 17.3% a year ago.

Brand-wise, BMW (+12.3%) defies the negative market to snap the top spot for the 4th time in Swiss history after April 2020, November 2021 and April 2022. It sports a splendid 10.1% market share vs. 8.5% over the Full Year 2023. Skoda (-7.4%) is up two spots on December to #2 while traditional leader Volkswagen (-24.6%) sinks to #3. Mercedes (-17.2%), Audi (-22%) and Toyota (-24.2%) all struggle below, falling faster than the market. Opel (+107.8%), Volvo (+27.4%) and Porsche (+1.6%) also shine in the remainder of the Top 10.

The Skoda Octavia (+109.1%) is up 10 spots on December to end the month at #1 for its third win in the past 9 months (add May and July 2023). Skoda manages a 1-2 with the Enyaq (+0.3%) in 2nd place and even places three nameplates in the Top 4 with the Karoq (-33.1%) at #4. The VW Golf (+51.7%) is in great shape at #3, with the Mercedes GLC (+18.6%) rounding out the Top 5. The Tesla Model Y (+242.5%) ranks 7th while the Volvo XC60 (+101.6%) and Audi A3 (+18.7%) also post stunning gains. The BMW X5 (+52.2%) is up to #12 vs. #40 over the Full Year 2023.
