Media post: Three Cult Classic Cars that should rise in Value

Many classic and future classic car enthusiasts are not motivated by profit. They just love to experience the unique styles and driving experiences offered by the cars of yesteryear.

The fact is, most cars’ values will depreciate, regardless of how well they have been cared for. However, if you research the market carefully, it is entirely possible to predict which cars will buck that trend and rise in value over time.

If you choose wisely, your next motor could earn you a tidy profit a few years down the line. Just remember to get an accurate car valuation for each model you’re considering, so you’ll know whether they’re competitively priced.

In this guide, we will share three much-loved models that are tipped to rise in value over the coming years.

Toyota MR2: The 80s showstopper

Produced between 1984 and 2007 and spanning three generations, the MR2 was one of the most entertaining vehicles in Toyota’s history.

Whilst the later Mk3 is a fine and reliable choice for everyday driving, it’s the boxy, wedge-shaped Mk1 with its iconic pop-up headlights (built until 1989) that’s considered a classic.

For the best potential investment, we recommend seeking out an original UK-spec Mk1 MR2. However, there are several pitfalls to be aware of. Due to this model’s age, rusting and accident damage are often causes for concern, so tread carefully.

You should be able to get a very useable Mk1 MR2 for around £3,500. However, if you’re looking for one in great condition with a low mileage, expect the price tag to double. Nevertheless, a quality used Mk1 MR2 could grow in value over time, making for a fantastic investment.

BMW M5: The ultimate driving machine

The second-generation BMW M5 (E34) was manufactured between 1989 and 1995 – and is renowned for its sleek styling and sporty performance.

The capable engine can propel this powerful saloon from 0-62 mph in a nimble 6.3 seconds.

Although you may find a runner for as little as £10,000, doubling your budget will help you find one that’s poised for appreciation over time.

However, caution is warranted, as with any high-performance car, potential issues abound. Therefore, it’s well worth seeking an expert’s opinion before committing to a purchase.

Mercedes-Benz 190: The baby Benz with big potential

Built between 1983 and 1993, the Mercedes-Benz 190 was conceived as a rival to BMW’s 3 series.

The most sought-after variants of the 190 are the E 2.3-16 and 2.5-16 models, which were developed in collaboration with Cosworth.

Whilst you may find a usable 190 for under £2,000, you’ll pay at least £7,000 for one that’s in great condition. Of course, if you want a Costworth model, you can expect to pay closer to £20,000!

All the above options have great investment potential due to the 190’s inspired design, impressive performance and collectability.

Good luck – and happy motoring!

Whilst success is never guaranteed, if you watch the market carefully and find any of these models at a great price, you should be able to turn a profit in the years to come.

One final piece of advice: a car is always a major investment, so review several prospective buys before you commit. We wish you every success on your motoring journey!
