Vietnam August 2023: Mazda CX-5 and Mitsubishi Xpander top freefalling market

The Mazda CX-5 soars to pole position in August.

According to local association VAMA, new vehicle sales in Vietnam drop -27.2% year-on-year in August to 22,540, leading to a year-to-date volume down -29.8% to 184,554. These figures climb to 25,685 (-31.5%) and 234,425 (-28.7%) when adding Hyundai and VinFast EV who report separately from VAMA. Note VinFast has not reported August 2023 sales and will from now on only report quarterly.

Thaco-Kia (-25.3%) is strong this month with 17.9% share, three percentage points above its YTD level of 14.9%. It overtakes Toyota (-41.5%) to now rank #2 year-to-date. Hyundai (-42.3%) is hit hard but holds onto the YTD pole position. Mazda (-1.9%) resists very well at #4 and 11.8% share vs. 8.6% so far this year but Ford (+112.5%) does much better at #5.

Model-wise, the Mazda CX-5 (+56.8%) surges to the pole position, selling 24 units more than the Mitsubishi Xpander (-40.1%), leader last month. The Toyota Corolla Cross (+8.2%) is up three spots on July to #3 ahead of the Ford Ranger (+532.4%) once again boosted by the new generation. The Ranger now ranks #2 year-to-date below the Xpander. The Kia Sonet (+41.6%), Seltos (+52.8%) and Honda CR-V (+17.4%) also make themselves noticed with fantastic gains.
