Vietnam July 2023: Mitsubishi Xpander and Mazda CX-5 on top, VinFast VF 5 Plus in Top 10

The VinFast VF 5 Plus is up to #8 at home in July.

New light vehicle sales in Vietnam are off -18.4% year-on-year in July 24,687 according to VAMA. The year-to-date volume is now down -30.2% to 162,014. These figures climb to 31,764 (-16.8%) and 208,740 (-28.3%) year-to-date when adding Hyundai and VinFast EV who report separately from VAMA. Thaco-Kia (-15.3%) is back on top of the brands ranking, overtaking Hyundai (-30.3%) and Toyota (-31.5%) both falling particularly hard. Mitsubishi (-17.1%) is up to 11.1% share vs. 7.8% so far this year while Ford (+97.9%) goes completely against the depleted market and doubles its sales year-on-year. Mazda (+47.5%) and local carmaker VinFast (+42.3%) also impress but only ranks #7. Now listed on the stock exchange, VinFast will have to do a lot better at home to satisfy shareholders.

Over in the models aisle, like a year ago the Mitsubishi Xpander (-6.7%) is a distant leader at 8.1% share, cementing its year-to-date domination (5.1% of the market). The Mazda CX-5 (+171.6%) surges to #2, its highest ranking since also hitting #2 in February 2018. The Hyundai Accent (-3.4%) resists at #3 ahead of the VinFast VF e34 (+1804.8%) at #4 vs. #6 year-to-date. The Ford Ranger (-10%) sees the new generation effect whittles down. The Toyota Corolla Cross (+26.5%) and Kia Sonet (+44.9%) shine with the new VinFast VF 5 Plus breaking into the Top 10 for the first time at #8. The Kia Seltos (+74%) and Ford Everest (+1672.9%) round out the Top 10 in fantastic fashion.
