Sweden July 2023: BYD Atto 3 up to #2, best-selling EV

Exceptional start for the BYD Atto 3 in Sweden.

New car sales in Sweden disappoints with July sales down -3% to 17,300 units. The year-to-date tally is now off -2.5% to 157,963. Electric cars soar 38.7% year-on-year to 6,487 ad 37.5% share vs. 26.2% a year ago in July 2022, whereas PHEV sales drop -8.4% to 3,882 and 22.4% share vs. 23.8% last year. All in all, rechargeable cars now hold a stunning 59.9% of the Swedish market vs. 50% in July 2022, equalling the level it reached last March. In the brands ranking, Volkswagen (-10.3%) repeats at #1, outselling local behemoth Volvo (-5.2%) at 12.2% share vs. 11.4%. Kia (-21.9%) is in deep trouble but gains two spots on June to #3 ahead of Audi (+105.6%) which delivers the largest gain in the Top 10. Skoda is also up (+19.3%) but the big event inside the Top 10 is the arrival of Chinese BYD at #8 with 4.8% market share. It ranks #23 with 1% share over the first 7 months of 2023.

The Volvo XC60 (+3.3%) scores its second monthly win of the year after last April at 4.7% share. 86 sales below is the surprise of the month: the new BYD Atto 3 soars from #20 in June to #2 this month with 4.2% share. A spectacular start for the Chinese model which becomes the best-selling EV in Sweden. Strikingly the next 7 models all beat the market with double-digit year-on-year uptick at least. The Tesla Model Y (+420.3%) is the most dynamic but falls to #8 for the month. The BMW i4 (+263.2%) also surges, with the Skoda Enyaq (+52.3%), Toyota Corolla (+52.2%), Volvo S/V60 (+26.5%) and Kia Niro (+22.8%) also outracing the market.
