Portugal July 2023: Fiat 500 climbs to pole position, market slowing down its growth

The Fiat 500 is the best-selling vehicle in Portugal in July.

16,074 new cars found a Portuguese home in July, a 11% year-on-year improvement vs. +42.1% in June. This brings the year-to-date volume up 39.6% to 126,229. Peugeot (-2.8%) easily remains in the brands lead but sees its share thaw to 9.7% vs. 11.5% so far this year. BMW (+69.1%) surges to 2nd place overall vs. #6 in June and #5 year-to-date. It distances fellow German premium brand Mercedes (-1.5%) in difficulty but up two spots on June to #3. Dacia (+28.3%) is back above Renault (+30.7%) while Fiat (+60.5%) is up 14 ranks on last month to #6. Notice also Volvo (+115.9%), Tesla (+4409.1%!), Cupra (+118.9%) and Mitsubishi (+127%) all sporting stellar gains.

Model-wise, the Fiat 500 (+194.8%) triples its sales year-on-year to soar into the pole position with 4.5% share vs. 1.8% year-to-date where it ranks #11. As a reminder ir ranked #70 in June so part of this month’s sales should be the easing of a stock bottleneck and deliveries of past orders. The 500 also ranked #1 in December 2020. The Peugeot 208 (+44.9%) is up one spot on June to #2 ahead of the Data Sandero (+9%) and Seat Ibiza (+30.2%). The Volvo XC40 (+195.6%), Renault Clio (+174.2%) and Tesla Model Y (+3045.5%) follow wth fantastic lifts. Below the Opel Corsa (-0.6%), the Peugeot 2008 (-46.8%) falls from #1 in June to #9 but holds onto the YTD top spot above the Peugeot 208. The Ford Puma (+710.5%) rounds out the Top 10 in spectacular fashion.
