Switzerland May 2023: Skoda places three models in YTD Top 5

The Skoda Enyaq repeats at #3 in Switzerland.

New car sales in Switzerland bounce back up 16.9% year-on-year in May to 21,569 units, leading to a year-to-date tally up 11.6% to 98,538. 4×4 deliveries are up 14.7% for the month to 10,784 and a round 50% share vs. 50.9% a year ago and up 14.1% year-to-date to 49.643 and 50.4% share vs. 49.2% over the same period in 2022. Petrol sales gain 10.8% to 7,486 and 34.7% share vs. 36.6% in May 2022, diesel is down -16.6% to 2,179 and 10.1% share vs. 14.2%, hybrid is up 22.5% to 5,900 and 27.4% share vs. 26.1%, PHEV edges up 4.6% to 1,683 and 7.8% share vs. 8.7% and BEV soars 63.5% to 4,313 and 20% share vs. 14.3% in May 2022.

Volkswagen (+14.6%) is the most popular carmaker in the country again with 10.3% share, it is however threatened this month by Skoda surging 46% year-on-year to 9.8% share. As a result Skoda is now #2 year-to-date vs. #5 over the Full Year 2022. Audi (+6.2%), BMW (-1.9%), Mercedes (+5%) and Toyota (-1.9%) follow but underperform. Tesla (+269.1%) delivers by far the biggest year-on-year gain in the Top 10 and is up 5 spots on April to #8. Renault (+36.8%) also shines at #10 while further down Dacia (+93.4%), Opel (+42.2%), Nissan (+166.2%) and Mini (+37.1%) stand out.

The Skoda Octavia (+87.9%) is up three spots on April to snap the models lead with 2.8% share and is now #2 YTD. It is followed closely by the Tesla Model Y (+133.6%) up four to #2. The Model Y however keeps the YTD top spot thanks to sales up 71.1% over the same period a year ago. The Skoda Enyaq (+195.2%) repeats at a formidable third place and climbs to #5 year-to-date as a result, making it three Skodas in the YTD Top 5 (add the Karoq at #4). Below are the Audi Q3 (-28.3%) and Fiat 500 (+35.6%). The Skoda Kodiaq (+29.4%) is up five ranks on last month to #6, the Mini Hatch (+23.7%) up 14 to #7 while the VW Polo (+28.3%), Audi A3 (+18.9%) and Skoda Karoq (-2.8%) camp on their April positions to round out the Top 10.
