Hungary May 2023: Volkswagen takes charge in disappointing market (-11.2%)
Volkswagen is the best-selling carmaker in Hungary in May.
New Passenger Car sales in Hungary lose -11.2% year-on-year in May to 8,999 units, tilting the year-to-date tally into negative at -1.7% to 47,089. This is the 2nd lowest May result since 2018 with only pandemic-plagued 2020 doing worse. The YTD total including light commercials is up 0.2% to 55,806. Volkswagen (+13.6%) leaps up five spots on April to take the lead of the brands ranking, only 14 sales above Skoda (+86.4%). Toyota (-30.7%) is in perdition at #3 while Suzuki (+17.6%) bounces back at #4. Kia (-44.4%) and Ford (-41.1%) freefall. BMW climbs two ranks on last month to #6, Mercedes is stable at #7, with Dacia and Audi rounding out the Top 10.
Over in the models aisle (PC +LCV), the Skoda Octavia (+263%) is ultra dominant, distancing the Suzuki S-Cross (-11%) and Vitara (+29.6%). The Toyota Corolla (-30.4%) is up three spots on April to #4 while the Dacia Duster (-35.9%) is up 11 to #5 but freefalls year-on-year. Excellent showing for the Renault Master (+11.6%) at #6 he VW T-Roc (-3.4%) is back among the 10 best-sellers at #8 while the Ford Ranger (+57.7%) and VW Crafter round out the Top 10. Notice also the VW Golf (+176.8%), Hyundai Tucson (+43.1%) and Toyota Hilux (+61.3%) all posting fantastic gains below.
