India Full Year 2022: Hyundai, Tata, Mahindra, Kia break records, Wagon R #1 in all-time high market (+23%)

Wholesales in India surge 23% year-on-year in 2022 to a new all-time record of 3,783,998 units, shattering its previous best of 3,384,982 units hit back in 2018. The market crossed the symbolic 350,000 monthly units milestone for the first time in September. Maruti Suzuki (+15.5%) continues to trail its “home” market and falls from 44.4% to 41.6% share in the process. Hyundai (+9.4%) also loses share from 16.4% to 14.6% but breaks its all-time annual volume record at over 552,000 wholesales. The next three manufacturers also reach all-time high volumes: Tata soars 59.1% to almost 527,000 units, Mahindra is up 65.2% to just under 333,000 wholesales and Kia (+40.2%) is up to 255,000. At #6, Toyota (+22.7%) hits its largest volume since 2012. Skoda (+125.4%) also impresses in the remainder of the Top 10. Citroen (+1307.4%) is pushed up by the arrival of the new India-specific C3.
Model-wise, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R (+18.2%) repeats at #1 and widens the gap with the #2 from 8,799 to 31,662 units, this despite falling to #10 in December. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno (+7.8%) ends the year at #2 above the Maruti Suzuki Swift (+0.8%). Note the entire podium loses share year-on-year. The Tata Nexon (+55%) splashes into the Top 5 for the first time at #4 vs. #10 last year, it distances the Maruti Suzuki Alto (-2.2%), DZire (+37.6%) and Hyundai Creta (+12.3%). Below the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga (+17%) and Vitara Brezza (+12.6%), the Tata Punch (+475.5%) ends its first full year in market at #10. The Kia Carens (#23) is the most successful 2022 launch above the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara (#44) and Skoda Slavia (#47).
