Switzerland October 2022: Toyota Yaris leads, Cupra Formentor up to record #4, sales up 14.1%
The Cupra Formentor breaks its ranking record in October.
The Swiss new car market is up 14.1% year-on-year in October to 17,185 registrations, keeping in mind October 2021 was off -28.2% on the year prior. The year-to-date tally remains in negative at -7.9% to 179,791. 4×4 sales soar 23.5% to 8,735 and 50.8% share vs. 47% a year ago and edge down -2% YTD to 90.318 and 50.2% share vs. 47.2% over the first 10 months of 2021. Petrol is up 11.3% to 6,684 and 38.9% share vs. 39.9% in October 2021 but down -18.6% YTD to 69,137 and 38.5% share vs. 43.5% in 2021. Diesel soars 23.6% to 1,897 and 11% share vs. 10.2% but skinks -20.6% YTD to 21,758 and 12.1% share vs. 14%. HEV sales surge 30.1% to 4,871 and 28.3% share vs. 24.9% and edge up 5.4% YTD to 44,849 and 24.9% share vs. 21.8% last year. PHEV drop -16% for the month to 1,310 and 7.6% share vs. 10.4% and -13.8% YTD to 14,954 and 8.3% share vs. 8.9%. Finally BEV trail the market at +10% in October to 2,409 and 14% share vs. 14.5% but soar 27.9% YTD to 28.923 and 16.1% share vs. 11.6% over the same period in 2021.
In the brands ranking, both Volkswagen (+46.1%) and Audi (+78%) sail off into the distance, the former hitting 12% share and the latter 8.6%. Mercedes (-3.5%) and BMW (-2.2%) go against the positive market and lose ground and share while Skoda (+9.5%) can’t quite catch on and remains at #5. The next four brands vastly outpace the market: Toyota (+65.5%) is the most impressive above Ford (+57.3%), Seat (+28.8%) and Renault (+22.7%). Hyundai (-32.5%) craters at #10. Below, Cupra (+388.9%) takes off to #13, equalling its highest ranking also hit last December and breaking its share record at 2.8%. Mazda (+58.9%), Dacia (+43.9%) and Kia (+34.5%) also make themselves noticed.
Model-wise, the Toyota Yaris (+185.5%) soars to a third monthly victory after January 2021 and August 2021. The VW Tiguan (+538.2%) posts a surreal gain to land in 2nd place above the Skoda Octavia (+73.1%). In fact, the Top 6 models all vastly outrace the market, starting with the Cupra Formentor (+261.3%) hitting a record ranking at #4 (previous best #6 in February 2021). The Skoda Octavia (+73.1%), VW Golf (+72.2%) and Audi Q3 (+66.7%) also shine. #1 a year ago, the Skoda Enyaq (-16.6%) drops to a still very respectable 7th place vs. #22 year-to-date. The Toyota Yaris Cross (+337%), Skoda Kodiaq (+229%), Seat Ateca (+198.6%) and Audi A3 (+139.3%) also shine below. #1 last month, the Tesla Model Y falls to #153 and the Tesla Model 3, #2 in September, is down to #241.
