Russia October 2022: Haval up to #2, Russian brands hold 57.9% of market down -62.8%

The Lada Niva crosses the 10% share milestone in October.

The Russian new light vehicle market worsens in October at -62.8% year-on-year to 45,228 registrations vs. -59.6% in September. The year-to-date tally is now off -60.8% to 502,474 units. Note these figures don’t include Chery, Cheryexeed, Mercedes and BMW data as these carmakers now only report quarterly. Following the same trend since economic sanctions hit the country as a result of its invasion of Ukraine, Russian and Chinese brands fare markedly better than the market again. Lada (-25.1%) advances to 42.3% share vs. 28.4% so far this year, with GAZ (-33.5%) and UAZ (-15.9%) also resisting well. As a whole, Russian carmakers are down -25.6% to 57.9% share this month vs. 27.9% in October 2021, a level unseen since 2005 when local brands held 62% share. As for the Chinese, Haval (-7.8%) leaps up to an unheard of 2nd place overall with a record 9.8% share, with Geely (-1.7%) virtually stable year-on-year and Changan (-32.3%) and FAW (-5%) also beating the market. 

Over in the models ranking, the Lada Granta (+70.9%) soars to stratospheric heights at 27.5% share while the Lada Niva (+80.5%) does the same, crossing the 10% market share milestone (10.5%) for the first time in what could be decades. The GAZ Gazelle (-34.3%) ensures the podium is 100% Russian like last month. The Haval Jolion (+103.8%) more than doubles its sales year-on-year to a new record 6.8% share at #4 just as the Geely Coolray (+28.3%) breaks into the Russian Top 5 for the first time. The UAZ Classic Commercial (+18.4%), Lada Vesta (-90.3%), UAZ Patriot (-50.4%) and GAZ Sobol (-30%) make it 7 Russian models in the October Top 10. For their part the Geely Atlas Pro (+45%), Haval F7 (-56.8%), Geely Tugella (+37.1%) and Haval F7X (-73.7%) make it 6 Chinese vehicles in the Top 30.
