Malaysia Full Year 2021: Perodua at 37.5% share, Mitsubishi (+90.9%) shines
The new Ativa (aka Daihatsu Rocky) couldn’t prevent Perodua’s fall in 2021.
Note Full Year 2020 data is also included in this article. The Malaysian new vehicle market is down -4.5% year-on-year over the Full Year 2021 to 508,911 units vs. 533,129 in 2020. Note Mercedes and Peugeot have stopped reporting sales in 2021 and they amounted to just under 6,500 units in 2020. Brand leader Perodua (-13.6%) drops faster than the market to see its share go from a record 41.3% to 37.5%, still an ultra-dominant figure. Proton (+2.9%) defies the market slump to advance to 22% share vs. 20.4% a year ago. Toyota (+22.4%) overtakes Honda (-12.3%) to claim the third spot with 14.1% share vs. 11% in 2020, reportedly helped by a strong score from the Hilux. Mitsubishi (+90.9%) is up spectacularly, almost doubling its volume year-on-year. It gains two ranks on last year to end 2021 at #5. Isuzu (+6.9%) is the only additional Top 10 brand to show a year-on-year increase whereas Nissan (-13.2%) and Mazda (-12.2%) are hit the hardest.
