India August 2022: Market flourishes +26.4% to August record, Mahindra, Tata Nexon and Punch at all-time high

Indian wholesales continue to evolve at historical high levels in August at +26.4% year-on-year to 328,079 units, a new record for the month of August, eclipsing its previous best of 292,550 established in 2017. Maruti Suzuki (+30%) manages to beat the market but its share, at 40.9%, remains slightly below its YTD level of 41.8%. Hyundai (+5.6%), albeit in positive, underperforms by a large margin but stays in 2nd place with 15.1% share. Tata (+68.4%) and Mahindra (+87.6%) both shoot up as it has been the case for the past 7 months, with Mahindra potentially breaking its volume record for the 2nd month running at 29,615 units. Kia (+33.3%) also outpaces the market in 5th place unlike Toyota (+17.2%) just as Honda (-30.5%) and Renault (-27.7%) struggle mightily. No additional brand grows faster than the market except recently launched Citroen (+1600%).

Over in the models ranking, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno (+17.7%) scores its 4th ever monthly win after December 2019, March 2020 and August 2021. Leader last month and year-to-date, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R (+91.1%) slips down to #2 but showcases a tremendous year-on-year lift. The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza (+17.7%) manages its second ever podium finish after August 2021 and its best monthly volume in almost four years: since October 2018. The Tata Nexon (+50.8%) breaks its monthly volume record once again at over 15,000 units, distancing the Maruti Suzuki Alto (+8.7%) and Hyundai Creta (-0.2%). The Tata Punch hits a new highest ranking (#7) and volume (12,006) this month. The Maruti Suzuki DZire (+1077%) compensates for a very low year-ago volume but still ranks at a low #9 vs. #4 year-to-date. The Mahindra Scorpio (+170.8%) is also believed to hit an all time high volume at over 7,000 wholesales. Below the Punch, the most popular recent launches are the Mahindra XUV700 (#22), Kia Carens (#25) and Skoda Slavia (#42). Citroen sells 825 India-specific C3.
