Mexico July 2022: Chevrolet topples Nissan for the first time in at least a decade
The Tracker helps Chevrolet to a historic pole position in Mexico in July.
The Mexican new light vehicle market continues to evolve slightly higher than last year, with July sales edging up 1.2% year-on-year to 83,137 units. The year-to-date total is now down just -0.2% at 601,563. We have a massive event atop the brands ranking this month: Chevrolet (+56.3%) surges ahead and topples traditional brand leader Nissan (-42.7%) for the first time since we started following Mexican brands monthly back in 2012, and potentially since 2006 when the two manufacturers were still toe-to-toe. Chevrolet takes the lead with an impressive margin of 3,634 units and 4.4 percentage points of market share. Below, Volkswagen (+7.9%) and Kia (+5%) both outrace the market ahead of a struggling Toyota (-21.6%). MG (+91.1%), Suzuki (+56.9%), Ford (+25.3%), Mazda (+8.6%) and Honda (+4.7%) also beat the market in the remainder of the Top 10.
Over in the models ranking, the Kia Rio (+30.5%) snaps its second ever monthly win alongside last April, an impressive feat given Kia only launched in Mexico as a brand in 2015. It also reclaims the #1 YTD spot and relegates the Nissan Versa (-44.2%) to 2nd place both for the month and YTD. The Chevrolet Tracker (+238.2%) claims its very first podium finish in Mexico, beating its previous best ranking of #6 reached just last month. Two additional nameplates break their ranking record in this month’s Top 10: the Chevrolet Captiva (+31.6%) at #6, eclipsing the #7 it hit last March and the Kia Seltos (+53.4%) at #9, beating the #10 it reached in October 2020 and February 2021. Notice also the VW Tiguan (+391.2%), MG 5 (+193.3%) and Chevrolet Onix (+126.1%) all scoring fantastic results just below.
