Hungary May 2022: Fiat 500 surprise leader, market fall slims down to -6.8%

The Fiat 500 is the best-selling vehicle in Hungary in May.

New Hungarian car and light commercial vehicle sales drop -6.8% year-on-year in May to 11,901 units, leading to a year-to-date volume off -12.7% to 55,521. Data is provided by Datahouse. Toyota (12.1% share) reclaims the lead of the PC+LCV brands ranking, distancing Ford (10.5%) and Volkswagen (8.9%). Kia (7.6%) follows whereas the leader of last year, Suzuki (6.2%) is down to #5. Toyota remains in the lead year-to-date above Ford and Suzuki. In the PC brands ranking, Toyota takes the lead both for the month and year-to-date while Volkswagen, Kia and Ford all also pass Suzuki down to a paltry 5th place and knocked down to #2 year-to-date. Toyota (+19.7%) and Volkswagen (+17.7%) are the fastest gainers year-to-date.

Over in the models ranking, the Fiat 500 (4.3%) surges 28 spots on April to land at #1 for what is believed to be the first time in Hungarian history, probably thanks to a mass order by fleet or rental companies. The Kia Ceed advances two ranks to #2 while the Suzuki S-Cross is knocked down to #3. In the year-to-date ranking, the S-Cross easily retain its crown, with a 1,146 unit-advantage over the Suzuki Vitara, down to #12 this month. The Kia Ceed places third above the Toyota Corolla and Dacia Duster. The Skoda Octavia ranks at #6 but is #15 for the month, with the Toyota C-HR in tow and in line with its monthly ranking. The Fiat 500 climbs up to #8 year-to-date while the Toyota Yaris and Ford Tourneo Custom close the Top 10. The VW Taigo (#37) and Dacia Jogger (#45) make their first appearance in the YTD Top 50.
