Indonesia March 2022: Toyota Kijang Innova takes control, volumes up 16% year-on-year

The Toyota Kijang Innova is #1 in Indonesia both in March and YTD.

Indonesian new vehicle wholesales soar another 16% year-on-year in March to 98,536 units, leading to a Q1 2022 volume up 41.1% to 263,832. This is higher than pre-pandemic March 2019 (90,189) and the largest March volume since 2018 (101,666). Meanwhile retail sales are up 14.7% year-on-year to 89,821 in March and up 33.6% to 238,377 year-to-date.

In the wholesales brands ranking, Toyota (+27%) outraces the market to reach 33.8% share vs. 30.7% over Q1 2022. In fact the Top 6 brands are unchanged on February and YTD with Daihatsu (+4.1%) underperforming but holding onto the 2nd place overall with 17.7% share ahead of Honda (+14.3%), Mitsubishi (+13.8%), Suzuki (-0.7%) and the best performer in the Top 8 Isuzu (+450%). Wuling (+6.9%) is up three spots on last month to #6, Hino is strong at +36.4% but Hyundai is strongest at +756.6%. 

In the retail brands ranking, Toyota (+17%) also beats the market to 34.4% share vs. 31.5% over Q1, and this time it’s the Top 7 that is unchanged on last month and YTD with Daihatsu (+31.9%), Isuzu (+27.8%), Mitsubishi (+19.7%) and Fuso (+12.7%) faring best. Wuling (+40.6%), Hino (+48.3%) and Hyundai (+673%) close the Top 10 in stellar fashion.

Looking at the wholesales models ranking, the Toyota Kijang Innova (+207.5%) takes the lead both for the month and year-to-date and triples its year-ago volume. It is followed by the Toyota Avanza (-16.1%) back up seven spots on last month to #2 but still lingering in 5th place over Q1. The Honda BR-V (+1225.6%) is up to the third place on the podium thanks to a new generation, with the Suzuki Carry Pikap (+2.1%) down two ranks to #4 and the Toyota Rush (-33.8%) suffering year-on-year but staying put in 5th place. The Daihatsu Terios (+92.1%) is the only additional Top 10 model to beat the market. The Toyota Veloz (#11) leads recent launches above the Toyota Raize (#13), Hyundai Creta (#17) and Daihatsu Rocky (#30).
