Switzerland February 2022: VW Tiguan takes the lead in market up 2.9%

The VW Tiguan is the best-selling vehicle in Switzerland in February.

New car sales in Switzerland edge up 2.9% year-on-year in February to 16,606 units, leading to a year-to-date tally up 4% to 32,505 sales. 4×4 registrations are up 7.1% to 8.082 and 49.2% share vs. 48.1% a year ago. Petrol sales drop -15.3% to 6,367 and 38.9% share vs. 46.3% in February 2021 while diesel falls -19.5% to 2,125 and 12.8% share vs. 17.4% a year ago. In contrast, HEV+MHEV is up 22% to 4,153 and 24.8% share vs. 21%, PHEV is up 29.2% to 1,510 and 9.4% vs. 7.4% in 2021 and BEV surges 76.9% to 2,441 and 14.1% share vs. 7.7% a year ago.

In the brands ranking, after an interruption last month by Skoda, Volkswagen (+11%) posts a solid year-on-year gain to reclaim the top spot with 10.4% share. Mercedes (-2.7%) is also up one spot on last month to #2 despite losing ground year-on-year. Skoda (+3.3%) follows the market but drops two ranks to #3. BMW (+5.2%) is up to #4 while Audi (+24.3%) is down to #5 ahead of Toyota (+18.1%) and Peugeot (+3.1%) all beating the market. Hyundai (+53.4%) post the largest year-on-year gain in the Top 10. Below, DS (+179.3%), Tesla (+118.7%), Lexus (+106.9%), Citroen (+60.5%), Mazda (+48.8%), Subaru (+42.6%), Honda (+41.4%), Mini (+38.2%) and Kia (+34.4%) all score fantastic lifts.

Model-wise, the VW Tiguan (+63.5%) snaps the pole position for the first time since March 2021 and 2.5% share is enough to lift it to #1 in the most fragmented market in the world. The Skoda Octavia (+4.3%) is relegated to 2nd place but keeps the #1 spot year-to-date for now. The Peugeot 208 (+59.9%) is up two spots on last month to #3, a ranking it now also holds year-to-date whereas it only ranked #36 over the Full Year 2021. The BMW X1 (+38%) is up 10 ranks on January to #4 and the VW Golf up 5 to #5. The Audi A3 (+50%) and Skoda Fabia (+31.8%) also impress in the remainder of the Top 10 while the Tesla Model Y is up 206 spots on last month to land at #9.
