New light vehicle sales in Pakistan spectacularly rally back from a 2020 volume hampered by the pandemic, gaining 90.5% year-on-year to 237,428 registrations. This volume only includes vehicles made in Pakistan. Suzuki (+108.5%) beats the market to cross the symbolic 50% share mark at 51.7%, while Toyota (+73.2%) and Honda (+49.7%) are more reserved and both lose share year-on-year. Hyundai (+413%) gears up beautifully, holding 3.7% of the market vs. 1.7% a year ago. JAC, Isuzu and newcomer BAIC are all under 0.5% share.
Looking at the models ranking, the Suzuki Alto (+129.5%) repeats in the pole position with an overwhelming 22.7% share vs. 18.8% in 2020. It peaked at an incredible 33.6% in December but didn’t rank #1 each and every month: the Suzuki Cultus was #1 in June and the Toyota Corolla #1 in November. All-in-all, the Toyota Yaris (+102.3%) ends the year in 2nd place, overtaking the Toyota Corolla (+37.2%) and Suzuki Cultus (+85.5%). The Suzuki WagonR (+137.6%), Toyota Fortuner (+218.4%) and Hyundai Tucson (+220%) also manage to outpace the galloping market further down.
