Indonesia January 2022: Suzuki Carry leads, Toyota Veloz up to #4 in market up 58.9%

The Toyota Veloz outsells the Avanza in January.

New vehicle wholesales in Indonesia rise up 58.9% year-on-year in January to 84,062 while retail sales shoot up 45.5% to 78,568. Compared to pre-pandemic 2020 levels, wholesales are up 4.5% but retail sales dip -3.1% to 81,059.

In the wholesales brands ranking, Toyota (+42.7%) can’t match the market growth and sees its share drop to 27.2% vs. 33.3% over the Full Year 2021. But sister brand Daihatsu (+103.7%) more than doubles its wholesales year-on-year to climb to 21.8% share vs. 18.6% over FY2021. Mitsubishi (+79.4%) also outpaces the market at #3 but Suzuki (+9.6%) and to a lesser extent Honda (+50.5%) trail the market. Wuling (+209.5%) and Hyundai (+876%) both post surreal gains in the remainder of the Top 10 while below, Kia (+413.6%), MG (+360.9%) and Nissan (+213%) make themselves noticed but with tiny volumes.

Retail-wise, this time Toyota (+49.8%) manages to beat the market but still show a weak share at 29.2% vs. 33.6% over FY2021. Daihatsu (+83.7%) and Mitsubishi (+59.5%) also shine whereas Honda (+9.3%) and Suzuki (+20.6%) underperform. Wuling shots up 133.1%, Hyundai is up 513.8% and among smaller brands MG (+330.8%) and Kia (+100%) perform best.

Over in the models ranking, the Suzuki Carry Pikap (+40.8%) reclaims the top spot for the first time since last June with a strong 6.4% share, distancing the Mitsubishi Xpander (+52.3%) less than 100 units below. The Daihatsu Sigra (+105.2%) leaps up five spots on December to land on the third step of the podium. The new Toyota Veloz arrives directly at #4 as it is now counted separately from the Avanza nameplate, the latter (+9.5%) falling to #12. Note Veloz+Avanza sales would largely surpass the Carry. The Honda Brio (+14.3%) and Toyota Kijang Innova (+15.8%) follow but vastly trail the market unlike the Mitsubishi L-300 Pikap (+98.1%). The new generation Daihatsu Xenia (+337.4%) climbs inside the Top 10 at #9. The Hyundai Creta lands directly at #24.
