Chile Full Year 2021: Chery Tiggo 2 and MG ZS top market surging 60.6%

New light vehicle sales in Chile spectacularly rally back up 60.6% year-on-year in 2021 to 415,581 units, returning above pre-pandemic levels and scoring the 2nd largest ever annual volume below 2018 (417,038). SUVs are up 79.1% to 174,278 and 41.9% share vs. 37.6% a year ago. Passenger Cars gain 35% to 121,372 and 29.2% share vs. 34.7% in 2020, pickup trucks are up 62.6% to 73,370 and 17.6% share vs. 17.4% and vans gain 75.9% to 46,561 and 11.2% vs. 10.2% a year ago.

Chevrolet (+41.8%) retains the brands pole position but drops below the symbolic 10% share at 9.3%. Suzuki (+54.4%) and Hyundai (+61.3%) are catching up while Nissan (+37.6%) is in difficulty and loses one percentage point of market share from 7% to 6%. The hero of the year is Chery (+248.9%) multiplying its 2020 volume by 3.5% to land in 5th place overall with 5.9% share. MG (+93.3%) is also very impressive at #8, with Volkswagen (+79.1%) the only additional Top 10 brand to beat the market. All-in-all, Chinese manufacturers are up 138.8% in 2021 in Chile to reach 28.8% share vs. 19.3% in 2020. They even hit 35.6% of the market in December which is believed to be an all-time record, vs. 23.8% in December 2020. Changan (+135.6%), JAC (+137.6%), Maxus (+191.8%), Ssangyong (+157.9%), Dongfeng (+102%), Foton (+191.6%), Haval (+129.7%), KYC (+136.4%), Opel (+135.1%), BAIC (+153.5%) and Jetour (+30720%) also make themselves noticed further down.

In a very volatile models ranking, two Chinese models take the top honours for the first time in Chilean history. The Chery Tiggo 2 (+215.3%) triples its sales year-on-year and surges 11 spots to take the pole position above the MG ZS (+56.9%) up one spot to #2. Leader in 2020, the Mitsubishi L200 (+15.6%). Another China-made vehicle points its bonnet in 4th place: the Chevrolet Groove aka Baojun 510. It is by far the most popular 2021 launch in Chile. The Toyota Hilux (+45.7%) is down three spots to #5, distancing the Chevrolet Sail (+56%), Suzuki Baleno (+39.4%) and Maxus T60 (+180.4%) up 12 spots to end the year as the third best-selling pickup truck in the country. Note the Top 5 best-selling SUVs in Chile this year are all China-made (add the Chery Tiggo 3 and JAC S2).
